He did concede five goals on Saturday, made a cock up with the late free and also missed a 21 and a penalty in the drawn match. When he did come up and blast home a few goals it was exciting and all that but I felt that it exaggerated his performances this year.
Kelly for Clare didnât do much wrong, Quaid for Limerick was also fairly reliable - kept Limerick in it in the first half versus Tipp. I would have given it to Maguire for the Dubs but the goal against Cork and his mistake in that probably will cost him one.
How many of the goals had he a chance with? One.
Kelly and Maguire both let in desperately soft goals.

He scored 4-9 in the championship, heâs nailed on
I picked them on the basis of who I think the selection committee will go for. The make-up of this committee is pretty flawed anyway as it consists of flip-flopping cunts like Martin Breheny who feels like he has to have one new radical idea per week to inflict on the nation.
Far too much weight is put on the All-Ireland final to the detriment of players who have consistently impressed through the league and championship. For this reason, Shane OâDonnell will be nominated and considered even though he shouldnât be within a asses roar of an award that should reflect a seasonâs worth of performances. Equally, ultra-consistent players such as Mickey Cahill, Kevin Moran and possibly Paul Murphy are forgotten about because of their relatively early exits from the championship.
This phenomenon is not new. From a local point of view, Stephen McDonagh and Damian Reale were two of the most consistent corner-backs in hurling for 10 years and never got a look in while Mark Foley ended up with two awards for skying aimless ball out of defence.
Like much in the GAA, the system is rotten but it will remain until someone shouts stop.

Agree with much of that but until the competition has everybody playing the same amount of games till semi final stage then the players who play more games will always be at an advantage. And thatâs probably right, if a guy plays well 3/5 times he is better placed than someone who played well 3/4 times as heâs more in the judges mind.
The system in Aussie Rules is much better, coaches and refs vote after the game. But they have a shit load of games
As far as I remember Whelehan was omitted by a panel of journalists. There was huge controversy over it, Bank of Ireland pulled out as sponsors (I think this was unrelated to the selection controversy though) and the upshot was that the selection process was changed for 1995 where the journalists were stripped of selection duties and the teams were instead chosen by players. Powerscreen came in as sponsors. This lasted for two years but journalists effectively ignored the 1995 and 1996 All-Stars as much as was possible. The system was changed back and journalists once again picked the teams for 1997, when Eircell came in as sponsors.
Paul Murphy gave the best corner back display for manys a year in the qualifier game vs Tipp.
Kevin Moran is the only player outside of the 4 semi finalists worthy of consideration also, Iâd have Cahill from Tipp getting a nomination also but certainly not an award.
I canât believe not one team has Patrick OâConnor on it, for me he is worthy receipient of the no 7 jersey. Conor Ryan came late to the party and whilst he was excellent 3 weeks ago, like Tannion last year, he doesnât deserve an all star for it.
My team:
Nash
Murphy
McInerney
McCarthy
Bugler
Rushe
OâConnor
Kelly
Galvin
Harnedy
Sutcliffe
Ryan
Collins
Horgan
McGrath
Hurler of the year- Tony Kelly by a distance, Harnedy or Horgan 2nd.
YHOTY- David McInerney if they decide Kelly canât win both. I donât get the Podge Collins hype, deserves an all star but heâs vastly overrated.
Itâs gas fellas leaving Shane O Neill out for one bad day and putting McInerney in despite being cleaned out the last day. If you compare the rest if their games Shane O Neill was streets ahead.

Just goes to show the difference one game makes. After the drawn game Collins was probably hurler of the year.
I donât get how you can say you donât get the hype. He was Clareâs best and most influential forward in most games this year, scored a few from play nearly every game, incredibly unselfish and hardworking, and played with unbelievable enthusiasm at 100mph for every ball, as well as some spontaneous moments of genius such as switching the hurl in his hands to handpass the ball in the galway game and the best point of the year in the drawn final. He still gets THOTY at least. A pity he was kept quiet in the final, he was HOTY otherwise.

Both were better than McCarthy.
Sorry Kev, Neither were better than McCarthy and OâNeill should have had two straight reds to boot.
