Hurling League 2014

The league is bull shit. Any competition that you experiment in shows what you think of it. Individual teams take it seriously from time to time but every team doesn’t all the time. The provincials are the same now. Cork and Kerry experimenting and not risking players with knocks says it all for me.

If the GAA get into bed with Sky then I can see down the line them telling the lads “hey listen, you guys need to streamline these competitions, this shit is marketable”. The GAA will see dollar signs and there will be re-structuring across the board. Might be a good thing, but it could be a disaster too.[/quote]
League is bullshit in cork until they get relegated, then suddenly it isn’t.

Indeed and they do

Just a bit of sabre rattling, nowt more.

I think the current system is just fine… but ignoring that for a minute, allowing all 32 counties to vote on hurling related matters is a joke, when the majority couldn’t give a shit about the sport and many would be hostile to it.

you sure about that?!

Davy Fitz far louder than JBM in calling for change. Davy isn’t from Cork and he drummed up a bit of fuss

The league is for playing. The championship is for winning.

And Cork fell right into his trap.

I think you spelt “whining” incorrectly.

Fella I’m very consistent on this. I’m almost glad the league wasn’t changed as I don’t think anyone should get away with relegation. I think and for a long time have seen the league as a waste of time and missed opportunity to play meaningful marketable games.

I know you have. I agree with you absolutely, and think the league and championship should be combined, but last year was as good a league as there has been for years, and the talk is all about changing it, and the suspicion has to be that for whatever reason, probably financial, if one of the "lesser"counties such as Galway were relegated, there would have been no debate. You cannot now change the league format in the boardroom without promoting Wexford back to the top tier. It is just unfair otherwise.

Does anybody have a breakdown of the vote?

Also (I read this in the paper so maybe it wasn’t fully correct), that they have 3 options,

  1. leave the same as last year,
  2. 14 teams
  3. 12 teams.

They came up with a completely new system of introducing 1/4 finals. Is this allowed? (Seen as it happened I presume it is)

Breakdown of the vote in the indo today. All fairly close.

I couldn’t find it, what page. Just said it was 19 - 17. To answer my previous question. It was agreed last December to include quarter finals.

How does promotion and relegation work?

So the 4th place team in the 2nd tier could win the league, even though they are one place away from a relegation play-off to the 3rd tier?
Some system.

By allowing 4 teams in 1B into the play-offs it really isn’t that much different to two side by side division 1’s.

Division 1A
Round 1 - Feb 15: Tipperary v Waterford; Feb 16: Galway v Dublin; Clare v Kilkenny.
Round 2 - Feb 23: Dublin v Clare, Kilkenny v Tipperary, Waterfordv Galway.
Round 3 - Mar 8: Tipperary v Clare; Mar 9: Kilkenny v Galway, Waterford v Dublin.
Round 4 - Mar 15: Dublin v Kilkenny; Mar 16: Galway v Tipperary, Clare v Waterford.
Round 5 - Mar 23: Kilkenny v Waterford, Tipperary v Dublin, Clarev Galway.

Is my understanding of Division 1b correct in that whoever tops the group after five games gets promoted for the following year?

As opposed to the old format where the top two faced off in a final?
