Give him credit for it you mean? I donât think thereâs anything too clever about what Davy does with the media, I think he just comes across very badly in interviews. But then I donât know that Loughnaneâs antics were particularly clever either. Certainly itâs hard o make the case it did Clare any favours. It was entertaining though, which is the point.
No one likes it too much when itâs their own team wrapped up in some media storm but it does keep the game in the spotlight. Journalists are desperate for stories and if they canât get them from hurling theyâll find some rugby player more than willing to ramble on about himself for long enough to fill a page or a radio slot.
That exposure is valuable, not necessarily for the player, but certainly for the game. But thereâs so much fear of the media spinning a story that very few want to have anything to do with it. In the end I think that makes the game, and teams, more vulnerable to damage from media stories than anything else. With the media platform, thereâs a means there of getting your side of the story out there.
