At club level I’d say it’s more so to do with rural population demographics. There were bigger families 20 years ago. You don’t see too many GAA families like the Meehans these days backboning club teams. Less of a problem for urban teams obviously.
Paddy O’Donovan is unbelievable
Saw him for Limerick u20s this year. Great yoke but not Screeney or Niland standard.
Heard similar unfortunately
Tony O Sullivan from cork was a ‘supreme stylist’ (c) ger canning. Bubblesesque
He was dainty and nimble like a ballet dancer. The sort that could run silently across creaky floorboards.
I didn’t include Kevin Hennessy on my Style XV but I think he’s my favourite hurler ever, maaaybe along with Ciaran Carey.
Whereas Fitzgibbon was a pure assassin, a hurling version of The Equalizer, Hennessy was more Columbo. He moved in a sort of way where he’d almost be pretending he wasn’t very good, that he was a bumbling bluffer out of his depth, and then… just one more thing… bang. He had the best grin in hurling, and he scored the best goals.
Niland is a long way off Screeney imo.
Agreed he’s much better than Screeney.
Lols
What a superb description of Kevin Hennessy
Kevin Cashman couldn’t have put it better
Screeney won’t make it as a senior. Niland would already do better than his brother.
Unfortunately the highest level Screeney will play competitively & have a chance of winning is Fitzgibbon.
Shane Conway 2.0
He’ll surely give the All-Ireland club a lash at some stage
Are Kilcormac coming very strong?
Like a fucking train
Don’t forget that Eddie missed an open goal when clear in on goal. Should have left it to DJ.
I recall him marking Eddie Brennan out of the match in one All Ireland final, held him scoreless, which says it all really.

I considered Joe Canning and Henry Shefflin but I dont think they quite belong in this company. Also killed me to exclude Damien Reale and Dan Morrissey
You’ve left off Mike O’Brien.
They’ve been winning more or less everything underage and have most of the stars of the good underage Offaly teams. They’ve a massive panel. 41 listed at the weekend which runs fairly deep. Once they start winning county titles, I’d estimate they’ll win 8 out of the next 10. They should have beaten Ballyhale a few years ago but have a bit to go to compete at that level now
A dominant Kilcormac/Killoughey team threaten to live out the ultimate Offaly hurling fantasy - winning All-Irelands while being referred to as K/K.
