Hurling Team of the Century 2000 - 2022

Naming 41 is fucking ridiculous behaviour by the way.

Correct, yes.

I don’t quite understand people rating Richie Power as an all time great. May have been supremely skilful and may have been rated as the best by the lads that played with him, but was never - to my recollection - the number one man in the Kilkenny forward line during his time, and probably on a par with a couple others as the number two. Nor did he do it for long enough. I know that’s because he was hampered by injuries and that’s unfortunate. I don’t deny he was a brilliant player but I wouldn’t even have him in the conversation for “all time great” teams. I don’t believe that’s a slight on him, he just doesn’t have the same body of work as others.

You’ve obviously never seen him play hurling.

Niland was better last year I thought and Screeney was better this year. But as ever there are extenuating circumstances to why that is. I will say though that Niland has a naturally bigger frame which will help him at senior. Both are rapid as it is anyway. Niland will probably be able to win his own ball eventually. He’s already decent in the air. Whereas that will probably never be a strong point for Screeney.

Ah he was class in fairness. Jesus he had Eoin Cadogan on toast in a semi final one year. Incredibly skilful and a real eye for goal.

He scored an absolute thunder bastard in an All Ireland u21 final too, against Tipp if memory serves (that could have been a league final too, and against different opposition)

That’s a good few years ago now. I’d say it was December 2014. Although Kilcormac had already won one against Oulart a couple of years previously.

On the topic if stylists I’m surprised that nobody has mentioned Kevin Broderick of Galway. I’m too young to remember anything pre-2000’s but he really captured the imagination with his memorable solo run and point against Kilkenny in the 2001 semi-final.

I find myself nodding my head in agreement here. I would have Richie Hogan, Eddie Brennan, Eoin Larkin, Mick Fennelly, and indeed Derek Lyng ahead or on par with Richie Power.

Broderick, Seanie McGrath and Joe Deane were all lovely stylish diminutive hurlers.

Id just be concerned that Niland is labelled the next Joe and unrealistic expectations put on him from the start.

The Galway public are traditionally very patient with their upcoming boy wonders :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Exactly! We’re famous for our patience :grimacing:

Once again, from a skill perspective Screeney is unmatched but Niland is stronger, faster and can score from distance.

I’d have Screeney ahead slightly but Niland is probably more Certain of making an impact

Excellent summation

His young fella Ruairí is on Kilkenny’s Tony Forristal panel next weekend.

Heard he is a level above any other KK lads at that age.

That statement was there a few years ago but might now be somewhat of an exaggeration. We will give the chap every chance. Time will tell.

That is not accurate currently. Has potential though. Playing with the Village might hinder him, he’d be the main man with the Shocks.

@myboyblue Power was absolutely gifted. Supernatural, stitched together with bits of Carey, John Troy and the best of Eamon Morrissey.

Being the main man in a rural club comes with its disadvantages. I’d say he’s fine where he is, noting though that some people in the Village dont even like the Village!
