I’ve only really seen the games of his prime back properly, after, but was at some. Very interesting player and very unique. Athletically, wow. A bit like Kyle Hayes now.

I’d say objectively that Ciaran Carey is very hard to rate.

Unbelievable talent, a force of nature at his best. However he never ever had the opportunity to supply a cohesive forward unit with Limerick. You could say the same about Seanie McMahon on this score really too to some extent.

Is there another universe where Ciaran Carey gets to play in a more considered manner and not trying to do it all, all of the time? A lot of what he sent in, was coming back very quick.

I love the way he talks up Cian. Huge pride there obviously, I wonder on some level is he talking about himself.

He is like a brilliant boxer without the world title, but a head-to-head monster. I am sure he would fancy himself with Seanie McMahon, but thats a different story.

Rank it. I’d say we’re talking somewhere around Ken McGrath, he is probably most like McGrath, with all the positional stuff and similar tendancies…McGrath maybe slightly steadier but CC more mercurial and quicker…with McMahon, its what you like, (McMahon probably edge on achievement) but Whelehan and Delaney would be another level again. Carey never played in a really top team firing, a really really top team where he could really just open up.

I think Carey and McGrath are similar in that they were both phenomenal and force of nature hurlers, who could impose themselves on a game, who regularly did things other players just couldn’t do and both with an immediately recognisable individual style and flair. Two of the greats of all time. I was surprised Anthony Daly made a case for Carey in a podcast with Anthony Nash and Liam sheedy when they were a picking a best of the last 50 years team a while back.

What team did they pick for a finish?

Don’t remember off the top of my head but they didn’t pick Carey. Thought Daly arguing for him having played against him so many times said a lot. Anyway when you get to those teams there’s always marginal calls and hairsplitting.

Was it this no? I remember listening to this. 29:50 midfield talk.

Dalo & TJ go for CC unanimously

Edit; not sure if that link went in right, you might be able to search it.

Could be. It was Daly sheedy and Nash anyway.
