Look at the stick Frances Loughnane is hitting the frees with here. Minuscule bos.
He only acts like it
How did it take them 100 years to work that out
Different game now. The hurley sticks of yore were for ground hurling and overhead pulling. The frying pans they play with now would have been of no use.
When will the next one be named? 2034 at the 150 years maybe
They should probably lock in two picks for pre 1950 say, two from 50 to 80 and then the rest a free vote of a panel of 100 experts. (with two places on that held for tfk)
When will the next one be named? 2034 at the 150 years maybe
Martin Breheny could launch one at any time.
There’s been a lot of good goalies in the last 40 years
Cummins, Fitzhenry and Cunningham top of my list
I suspect that a team picked now would have a wing back at 6 because there have been so many all timers
Cunningham was a ham. Not a top class goalkeeper in my opinion.
He picks one on the third Tuesday of every month
Cunningham was a ham. Not a top class goalkeeper in my opinion.
Tipp would have a few more All-Irelands if Cummins didn’t keep directing his saves straight back to the opposition forwards.
Nonsense
Gaelic football team 1884-1984
Dan O’Keeffe (Kerry) - Cluxton walks in here
Enda Colleran (Galway)
Paddy O’Brien (Meath) -
Seán Flanagan (Mayo)
Sean Murphy (Kerry) - James McCarthy, Lee Keegan, Tomas O’Se all have to be ahead here
J. J. O’Reilly (Cavan)
Stephen White (Louth)
Mick O’Connell (Kerry) - Brian Fenton wins here I think
Jack O’Shea (Kerry)
Seán O’Neill (Down)
Sean Purcell (Galway)
Pat Spillane (Kerry)
Mikey Sheehy (Kerry)
Tommy Langan (Mayo) - Peter Canavan in
Kevin Heffernan (Dublin)
Gooch, Maurice Fitzgerald, Seamus Moynihan would all be in contention.
Personally I think I’d find room for Colm O’Rourke somewhere. And Mick Lyons. Conor Gormley would have a shout at 6.
Jack McCaffrey is the best 7 I’ve seen play the game. Has a higher ceiling than anybody else in that position, but has flitted in and out over the years.
Sheehy, O’Neill and Purcell are probably safe in the forwards. Pat Spillane is not one of the best six forwards to ever play the game.
Cunningham was a ham. Not a top class goalkeeper in my opinion.
I can’t recall any howlers by him off the top of my head. 18 or 19 years as Cork goalkeeper is serious going. You don’t do that if you’re not very good.
Damien Fitzhenry did commit an occasional howler but I think he’s the best goalkeeper I’ve seen.
Nonsense
Great keepers stop all kinds of shots, the greatest keepers move the sliothar away from danger. Murphy and Fitzhenry are in a tier on their own above the rest due to this.
Until they weigh down the sliothar again no fella who has hurled in the last 10 years can be considered.
Tommy Murphy stays in the picture, drop out that one of O Neill or Purcell and drop Jack O in there.
Job is oxo.
I wouldnt disagree that todays players are probably far more skillful and fitter than their counterparts from 50 odd years ago, however its not how it should be judged. It really should be based on how far they were elevated above their peers at the time (and I dont mean carrying them off shoulder high). How much did they stand out as being far better than team mates or opponents, how critical were they to their team to be considered the best in the country at the time. The likes of Mackey, Rackard and Ring all easily meet that template, they were superstars of their era, miles above others around them, and why they’ll pretty much always be on these teams.
another pointless list. Have fun lads
A futile exercise. Decade by decade is the only way you can judge it. Anything else just dilutes it
In my lifetime the 15 that I enjoyed watching the most without shoe horning lads in. The lads who could do unexpected and create a buzz or do things their peers couldn’t . Not necessarily the greatest hurlers I have ever seen but ones I enjoyed watching most when on song
Fitzhenry
Kavanagh-Lohan-Canning
Walsh-Seanie-Whelahan
Colin Lynch-Cian Lynch
Kelly-Shefflin-Paul Flynn
Eoin Kelly-Canning-Mullane
The likes of JJ Delaney, Sean Finn, Mick Fennelly, Kyle Hayes, TJ, DJ, Eoin Larkin and a handful of others would probably oust a number of those above if you are picking dominant hurlers/the best 15 I have seen
The likes of Lar, Ben O’Connor, Richie Power and Ken McGrath were lads I loved watching but didn’t make the cut.
Ah Jesus, give us Corcoran at 2 at least,
He did nearly all his hurling at six after starting at 2 though. He was a great hurlers but I was trying to keep the backs in their best positions.
Murphy was the best corner back I saw from cork but no flash. Just a natural defender
Is that Tony Kelly at 10?
