A thread for hurricane talk, including but not limited to actual hurricanes and people with the nickname hurricane.
So Hurricane Irma is going to do untold to the Caribbean over the next few days, a record strength Hurricane for one that formed over the Atlantic, rather than the warmer Caribbean.
Current projections are slightly better for Haiti but it wouldn’t take much to cause havoc there again. Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and Cuba are on track to get it full force in the face, while Florida is also in the firing line later this week.
Not only that but tropical storm Jose is following behind it and expected to reach Hurricane strength shortly. Though not yet expected to be near as strong, it’s on a similar path to Irma and could hinder clean up efforts.
As if that wasn’t enough there’s also a third named storm Katia forming off Mexico which could make Hurricane strength by the weekend.
Makes ya appreciate the climate we have here. Yes the summers rarely get too warm but at least we are not battered every few weeks by hurricanes. If that happened here we would be in the same state as Haiti
Having survived a hurricane - I’ll be glad to answer any questions here — particularly into the emotional state of those on the ground before, during and after the event.
Ricardo RossellĂł, governor of Puerto Rico, says the island has been preparing for a week for what is set to be its worst ever hurricane.
“We are hoping for the best but of course preparing for the worst,” he told CNN. Irma is due to hit northern Puerto Rico this evening.
Rosselló added: “This is a category 5 hurricane unlike has never been seen before, so although we hope that the trajectory continues up northwards, we are preparing for the worst. Keeping people safe is our main objective.”
He added: “Flooding is a main concern. We just saw with Harvey how the main cause of death was essentially flooding … The second area of concern is wind. Category five winds are really aggressive, it is essentially the speed of an airplane taking off. These are very strong winds that we are talking about, something that we have never experienced here in Puerto Rico.”
Hurricane Sandy ruined a trip to NYC for me. Although good buzz going on a pub crawl in the middle of it with streets totally deserted. Some bars introduced a special hurricane menu with prices marked up 20% for punters who were stuck in the city. Capitalism baby.
