If you owned a pub, would you serve a traveller?

I was at home over the weekend and the owner of one of the pubs in town refused to serve two travellers who are settled in the area. They arrived in, completely sober, ordered two pints, and the owner refused, entirely on the grounds that they are travellers. According to him, the lads are pretty sound but travellers can’t be trusted.

So if you owned a pub, would you serve a traveller?

Reasons for:

  • They are just like any other person so why not serve them like you would serve anyone else

Reasons against:

  • There have been instances where travellers have gone on the rampage in my town, smashing windows, starting brawls etc.
  • Due to the general discrimatory nature against them, once they get served in one pub they alert their mates and soon there could be 30 people in the pub, which increases the liklihood of rows.
  • Settled people generally look down on travelllers so would not be best pleased having to share a pub with them.

I am voting yes, because essentially refusing to serve them purely on the grounds that they are travellers amounts to discrimation. Now there may be reasons for this, and I understand that, but still I don’t think it’s fair not to serve someone purely on the grounds that they are travellers.

I wouldn’t serve an Irish person. Paddys Out!

I’ve seen both sides of it, when they have been no bother and had their few pints, and when its gone all wrong. When it goes wrong its so wrong that unfortunately it totally outweighs the memories of any half decent lads that i served over the years.

It depends on what type of group it is, with kids they seem fine on a sunday afternoon or whatever, or couples over 35ish seem fine. trouble is when its 3-4 20 odds. I’d say no then.

What the bar owner did was illegal as far as I know. Wasn’t there a landmark case a few years ago?

I’d serve them anyway. Deal with trouble when it arises.

No way would I serve the filthy animals, trouble follows the fuckers.

I heard a story yesterrday of a pub owner in Roscrea who used to put a shot of dettol in the first pint of each of the travllers and they never ordered a second one. This is probably the best course of action as he could not be brought up for not serving the filth.

A simple yes or no will suffice RTT. No need to sit on the fence.

The trouble with travellers is that even the best of em are still travellers at the end of the day. I was in school with a few of em and you’d get on grand with em, but the same cunts would rob you blind if you weren’t paying attention.

I understand what Farmers saying in that they’ve rights and that but if you lived in an area with a lot of them you wouldn’t be long revising your opinions.

In my own experiences with them is that they are terrible drunks, never came across ones that could go into a pub and drink 4 or 5 handy pints and go about their business…There would always be some bit of drama, normally between themselves

of course I would

i assume its illegal not to serve them, maybe the Irish should focus less on partnrship & more on equality when dealing with travellers.i can see the benefit of both approaches but having equality acts in law will force people not to discriminate

Legend has it that one of them drank 40 (forty) pints of Guinness over the course of one day in the local hotel and was still standing.

Yes.

Mashin McInerney often did that on a wet afternoon while watching the racing

Inbreds are terrible drunks - same story for the abos and native americans. they should stay away from alcohol or stop riding their cousins.

that post doesnt make sense. native americans are aboriginees

What about riding your aunt??

No, serve one, you have to serve them all, would prefer my premises not to get a reputation for being welcoming to scum.

If I was a publican I wouldnt be for serving them, theres a select few from New Ross who get a drink in the Spots,id know them to be alright sorts eneogh but they’d probably do you aswell the cunts, the nine or ten of em or so that do get Beer know better than to alert the rest of em.they know the score.

Drink drivers ruin more lives than Travellers…
