Like every job, there’s always a few bad eggs, but in my (limited) experience with conveyancing, I’ve found them to be fairly sound. A mate of mine works in the game, and between the Law Society’s eye-watering indemnity costs and the government with their hands in the pot—23% VAT here, 50% income tax there—it’s hardly a gold mine.
Sure, at the top end, there might be a few raking it in, but most of them are just about keeping the lights on. By the time they cover all the other random costs, I’d say it’s more “scraping by” than “money tree.”
As always, it depends. You’d like to think the judge weighed everything up and handed down a reasonable sentence, however harsh it seems from here.
