Inexplicably successful Irish people

Canned Carrott, which was made in the 80s, once had a sketch that stuck in my mind, where Jasper Carrott is in a restaurant and has finished his meal. There’s a house band playing soft music in the background.

Carrott backons the waiter. “Could I have the bill, please?”

The waiter goes: “Certainly, sir.”

The waiter then beckons the band.

In the background you hear the band leader go “1,2,3,4…”

Then the theme music from “The Bill” blares out.

A decade or two decades later, I was channel flicking one night and there was a sketch show by Norn Iron’s “Hole In The Wall Gang” on on BBC1. I left it on for a few minutes, and yer man who plays “Da” in “Give My Head Peace” is in a restaurant.

He asks the waiter for “the bill”.

The waiter nods at the house band…

Very good. I laughed at both scenarios while reading that. Great comedy.

But that’s defeating his entire point don’t you see!

The point of it was that the Hole In The Wall Gang had obviously seen Carrott’s witty sketch from back in the day, and waited what must have been 15 or 20 years to steal it.

However, that’s a hell of a lot shorter than we’ll be waiting for you to ever make a witty comment on this forum, even a stolen one.

I know sid, but you didn’t have to rehash it a third time. No need.

Think those in the free state at the time wouldn’t really get the real gist of that particular comedy, was pure local

Canned carrot was a great show. I think I remember reading that he wrote none of his own jokes though, which kind of makes me like him less.

Perhaps he stole that joke from @glenshane?

Might explain why sur is so miffed.

On reflection…nah.

It was brilliant at times, there was something healthy about it.
