Ireland - Euro 2012

FAO: Balbec

Thinking of renting a car while at the Euros and going off the beaten track when travelling between games.

Is it worth the hassle or is this piece on wikitravel overhyping things a little about the state of the roads/Polish drivers, etc??

http://wikitravel.org/en/Poland#By_car_2

It is overhyped a bit but it is true that most Polish drivers are maniacs. A guy in a company car effectively believes he is immune from any accident and drives accordingly. The main roads between match locations are fairly good but over taking trucks can be a problem on the two lane roads. If you are driving on the main motorways you tend to spend more time looking in your mirrors than at the road ahead of you because there is always someone up your back trying to overtake. Driving in cities and towns is ok once you follow the rules. The alcohol limit is effectively zero when driving best not to chance it.

Neil Lennon was in the papers today talking up Anthony Stokes chance of being included in the Euros.

He hasn’t a hope of making the Euro’s but I would like to see him given another shot next August/September before the World Cup qualifiers begin.

If he hadn’t pulled out of the games last summer he could well be going but he did and it allowed Simon Cox his opportunity and he has been very impressive since coming into the set up

Very unlikely at this stage but his form this season and his ability could give him a chance in the event of some injuries up front. He just has to keep playing well and all we can do is hope that carthorse Doyle gets an injury, think Long’s hot streak is over as well so he wouldn’t be much of a loss either. We’ve seen how Trapattoni has rewarded McClean ahead of the likes of Treacy, Lawrence and a few others so hopefully if we pick up a few knocks along the way Stokesy will be presented with a chance.

I have experienced this. Drivers overtake with cars approaching closely in the opposite direction. There seems to be an unwritten rule that the approaching car moves onto the hard shoulder to let the overtaking car pass.

I believe his exact words were that Trap can’t ignore Stokes for much longer. He obviously doesn’t know Trap all that well.

Aggression is rewarded. Of course not giving way in a situation like that means you will be killed stone dead.

A small price to pay for keeping your pride in tact, IMVHO.

Interview with Shay Given will be on RTE after the Champions League tonight. He was in Dublin today and interviewed for RTE News and Newstalk also. Points of interest:

  • He seems highly enthused about the upcoming championships
  • He was hoping we’d get England in the draw
  • Caleb Folan’s introduction party piece was most memorable for Given. Folan did some sort of rap about himself
  • Given refers to the Irish manager as Trapattoni
  • He hasn’t tried to talk to S Ireland about returning to represent his country. He said no player should need to be persuaded to represent their country

Darren Randolph might be a dacent bet there. Shay has had an injury or two, Westwood not playing and Forde throwing them in week in, week out.

Jesus that’s a very decent bet. You’re basically getting 16/1 on one of three players getting injured between now and May. Would Colin Doyle not be in with a shout too or is Randolph definitely next in line?

nah-he will bring 2 keepers,so you are wrong

Good bet alright. Randolph is definitely next in line at the moment Gola.

Fuck sake lads, they’ve taken the market down now. I thought this board knew how to pull a gamble off

I thought Brady’s comments on McClean were interesting last night particularly considering he isn’t one for hyperbole.

Oh Jesus :frowning:

T’was in the merry month of June, from our home we started,
Left old Eireann’s Isle, to Poland we departed,
Hope within our hearts, we can win the trophy,
We are all a part of Trappatoni’s army,
Get behind the team, hear the Irish scream,
C’mon you boys in green, Ireland’s bouncing back again,
We have got our Trap, the cat is in the sack,
We’ll not forget you Jack, On the rocky road to Poland.

One, Two, Three, Four, Five,
Irish eyes are smiling,
Let your voices ring
Trappatoni’s army,
Everybody sing.

You’ll never beat the Irish x 4

Make your mother proud, inflate your plastic hammer,
Bate your bodhrán loud and learn your Polish grammar,
Credit Union loan, sold the Opel Corsa,
Hired a camper van, picked it up in Warsaw,
Been so close before, hopes slammed in the door,
Now we’re back for more, we can win the battle,
C’mon you boys in green, never have we seen,
Such a fearless team, on the rocky road to Poland.

One, Two, Three, Four, Five,
Irish eyes are smiling

Let your voices ring
Trappatoni’s army,
Everybody sing.

You’ll never beat the Irish x 4

Ireland Abú. We love.

That looks magnificent.

Agree. Looks a cracker. Can’t go far wrong with Damo.
