Ireland - Euro 2012

Maybe but I’d doubt it, if there was some more credable defensive options to come into the squad it would probably happen but I can’t see him dropping one of the 5 strikers to bring McShane, Duffy or Damien Delaney.

For all intents and purposes it will be 23 from the 26 players (the initial 24 man squad he picked for the Czech friendly along with McClean and Green) barring injuries in defence

He could do it to bring Coleman with give options in midfield and defence though.

It’s quite unlikely that Trapp would bring him though but the five strikers are quite similar in style and I can’t see the point in bringing five.

As I said earlier, we will more than likely already have 3 right backs in the squad, Coleman has never played right back for Ireland and Trap has stated previously that he sees him as a winger only at this point in time. While you could make the case that we don’t need all five strikers the fact is that Trap rates and trusts all five of them and have all made big contributions during different stages of qualification and I can’t see him dropping one so he can bring a player who he doesn’t particularly trust to be a fourth choice right back/fourth choice winger. If all five strikers are fit and well I would be very surprised if he doesn’t take all five

I wouldn’t say Foley is at all guaranteed to go.

Again there aren’t many other credible options for defensive positions. He has had trouble with injuries but has been an ever present in the squad for the past 3 years when fit. Can’t see who is going to get in ahead of him at this point

How many competitive games has he played in? 1? 2 at most. He has failed to cement his place in a Wolves side who are playing abysmally this season with the worst defence in the league.

He played against Macedonia at home in the last qualifying campaign. Regardless of club form, who is Trap going to pick ahead of him, the other options are the likes of McShane, Duffy, Cunnigham etc. The likes of Wilson and Clark had their chances and have fallen down the pecking order due to not showing up in Wilson’s case and Clark’s poor showing last summer. The Seven defenders named in the last initial squad will all go to the Euro’s barring injury - O’Shea, St Ledger, Dunne, O’Dea, Ward, Kelly and Foley

So he’s made one competitive appearance for Ireland? I think he’s far from certain, his form has gone downhill dramatically this season. Trap could just as easily go for Coleman, Foley would be effectively brought as a 3rd choice full back, whereas Coleman as well as offering cover at full back, is a genuine option for one of the the wide berths.

I thought McShane was ahead of Foley in the queue.

So you are dismissing Foley because he has only one competitive appearance yet you class Coleman as a genuine contender despite the fact he has zero competitive appearances. This is without taking into account that Coleman is also having a poor year at club level

I’m saying Foley is far from a certainty to go and Coleman is more likely to have a bigger impact if chosen.

Foley will go as there is no real competition for defensive positions and is rated by the management. Coleman is seen as a winger by Trap and may well go but is fighting it would with McClean, Green and McCarthy for the last spot, Coleman will not be brought as a defensive option and if he does go will only be used in an absolute emergency back there

Foley will likely see no action, he’s the third choice right back. Picking squads for two matches and picking them for a tournament where you have no ability to replace injured players are different prospects and I think there are quite a few players fighting it out of positions - Gibson, Fahey, McCarthy, Coleman, Foley, Long, Walters and Cox are probably battling it out for 4 or 5 positions. I wouldn’t say any of them are certainties. What I believe Coleman has in his advantage is that he’s an option at full back if needs must - we are well covered there in any case. Foley is a player who if we bring is unlikely to see any action.

You need to view this in the context of who our manager is and what he will look at when picking the squad and not your own preferences. He simply will not go to the Euro’s with just 6 out and out defenders, Coleman may well be able to do a job at right back but he is a winger in the managers eyes and will be brought as a winger if selected. Foley has been involved in every squad when fit since coming into the set up and I can’t see why he will jettison him now barring an alternative appearing between then and now (which simply won’t happen). Foley may not see much action but will get his place in the squad

Well you’re saying he’s going to Poland with 3 recognised centre backs and 1 recognised left back so I don’t know what’s worse? Coleman is probably every bit as good a defender as Foley in any case and his form this season and the fact he can’t keep his place in that Wolves side this season must be a real worry. Foley is not a mainstay in this squad either, he’s been a squad filler more than not - making just the one appearance in qualifying. I think it’s highly plausible that Coleman may now have usurped him, he offers more genuine versatility. I’m not saying Coleman will go ahead of Foley, what I am say is that Foley is far from a certainty and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Trap take Coleman ahead of him. They may both go, neither may go. There’s about 7 or 8 players fighting it out for 4 positions.

Disagree, the squad all but picks itself at this point and the only real decision to be made is who gets the last midfield spot between Coleman, Green, McCarthy and McClean. Fahey and Gibson are all but nailed on as are the likes of Cox & Walters at this point barring injuries or fitness doubts.

I wouldn’t necessarily say Fahey or Gibson are nailed on either, one of them might not go. There’s a different mindset when picking players for a tournament than from an ordinary match squad, you can’t make change after the man has to take on board choosing flexible players. Will Trap take 5 strikers with him? I don’t know, it’s hard to tell what he will do. There are guys there who have been squad regulars but who have not got much action along the way, some of them have struggled this year. The certainties I’d regard (if fit) are:

Given
Westwood
Forde

O’Shea
Dunne
St. Ledger
Ward
O’Dea
Kelly

McGeady
Whelan
Andrews
Duff
Hunt

Keane
Doyle

That is 16 out of the 23, I’d expect 2 of Walters, Cox and Long to definitely go, all 3 of them is probable as well.

Fahey, Gibson, McCarthy, McClean, Coleman, Foley, Green and Green are the other contenders for the remaining spots. Wilson and Clarke are outside contenders but I’d be very surprised to see them go.

Fahey’s versitility means that he is nailed on, he isn’t going to be left at home at the expense of McCarthy, Coleman or Green while now that Gibson is getting regular first team football should also see any question marks about his participation at the Euro’s dissipate. The only real debate is whether Trap goes for 5 central midfielders and three wide players with Fahey seen as an emergency wide man - this would open the door for either McCarthy or Green as the fifth central midfielder or whether he goes for 4 central midfielders and 4 wide players which would open the door for either Coleman or McClean.

Trap also made reference to Foley’s ability to play in central midfield is needed shortly after we qualified, it is obvious that they like the guy and the fact that only 7 defenders were called up for the Czech game would add more credence to the theory that these are the 7 defenders he will bring to the Euro’s

Id be shocked if Paul Green didnt make the squad.

Defo Walters, Long and Cox. Fahey has done well for Trap too, Id make him a cert too. Thats 21. Gibson and one from Foley/Coleman I reckon for the last 2. If Gibson does anything at all in one of the friendlies he should be in.

McLean will need an injury I reckon to get in. Clark has been injured for a good while now. No chance. Wilson would be perfect for versatility for the last spot and would probably be a regular now if he had bothered his hole showing up to play for his country. Fuck him.

Form wise negatives - Given was diabolical last weekend. Threw one in but didnt even attempt to come for numerous crosses that Arsenal placed within 2 yards of him. Looked like a man minding himself. Dunne - off injured for a good while. Wonder what his weight is like during this absence. Duff and Hunt arent exactly doing much at club level. Keane is back in semi retirement. Kevin Doyle, I just dont know.

On the plus side - JOS, Kelly, Andrews, Whelan all playing regular football. So is Ward but playing in that Wolves defence is hardly good for confidence. Long scored an overdue goal at the weekend. Hardly a sign of Cox at club level. Gibson back from injury and doing well at Everton. Fahey doing well under Hughton at Birmingham. How is McGeady doing these days?

I’d expect Fahey to go as well, he’s been involved a fair bit under Trapattoni and hasn’t pissed him off like Gibson has with missing friendlies. Was reading the other day that McGeady has fallen out with Karpin and has been sparingly used in recent games, Zenit are supposedly keen on him at the minute.
