Ireland - Euro 2012

Ronnie Whelan is on anyway Bandage. Good bit of coverage on it on the news as well. Was watching interview with Duff on rte player there after game yesterday where he said it was turn of football now and had thinly veiled attack on your beloved rugby football.

Lovely video at end of RTE’s coverage last night looking ahead to showtime in June/July.

I’ve said it before & I’ll say it again, Stephen Kelly is a lovely man.

Ronnie Whelan is nuts.

Just thinking about it and with squads in by May 29th there is precious little opportunity for someone outside squad presently to make an appearance in final 22. Doubt Trap will go with anyone unproven at international level/unfamiliar with how we play.

Yes larry. I’m open to correction but I think there’s only 2 more friendly dates prior to the tournament squad announcement - one in February and another in May. Then there’s a designated period following confirmation of the squads where teams can play friendlies. Sky Sports News report that as being between the 1st and 5th of June so I’d expect us to play 2 more games then. The tournament commences on 8th June in Warsaw with Poland in action.

Reaction from Irish players, Trap and Delaney coming up on Off The Ball after the 9pm news bullet-in.

Trap hinted in his press conference earlier that he would consider only taking 4 strikers because defenders and midfielders are more likely to pick up suspensions and he needs to have adequate cover in this positions.

It depends on the position Larry. For example aside from Ward we have no other natural left back in the squad, so there is a chance for the likes of Tierney to force his way in or Cunningham to come back into the reckoning. With Whelan, Fahey and Andrews already assured of their places there is probably room for someone to force their way in as the fourth choice central midfield player given that McCarthy isn’t rated that highly while Gibson has flattered to deceive and is not getting any gametime at club level so it is possible that Meyler or other long shots like Garvan or McCann could make an impact, although the latter two are very much long shots. Hard to see another striker or wide midfielder forcing his way into the reckoning alright as we have plenty of competition and existing options in the squad and probably the same at right back.

Mick is rightly up for next Summer :pint:

OPPOSITION TD MICK Wallace has asked the government to move the Dáil summer break next year so that TDs can fully enjoy the European Championships.

The Wexford TD raised the issue in the Dáil this morning but was shot down by Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore.

Wallace suggested that as there will “probably” be a six week break for TDs next summer it could be moved to coincide with the football tournament.

“It (Euro 2012) will be a great break for the people who are suffering from the austerity measures”, he told the Dáil. “Given that there will probably be a six week recess at some stage next summer, would the Tánaiste consider arranging two weeks of it to coincide with the first two weeks of the soccer?”

His request was met with bemusement from Gilmore, who told the Dáil: “It shows how much times have changed around here”.

The Tánaiste noted that it was unusual to have a TD ask to move the summer break:

“There used to be a time when opposition Deputies were complaining about the length of the summer recess”, he said. ” This is certainly a first in that we have got a request not only to extend it but to have it in June. Unwittingly, Deputy Wallace might have stumbled on an issue which will find considerable support on the Government side.

“The Government will make a considerable effort to keep its nose to the grindstone and deal with the issues of the people. We will have to watch the games on the television”.

Wallace emphasised that he was asking for the time off to be “reorganised” rather than extended. He also took to Twitter to explain this:

Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett ended the discussion, telling the Dáil chamber, “Deputy Wallace had his run,” before moving on to other business.

The Dáil broke for recess this year on 21 July and resumed on 14 September. The European Championships will run from 8 June until 1 July 2012.

  :pint:

Mick Wallace is an utter fool of a man

David Meyler played 90 minutes for Sunderland in their reserve derby against Newcastle last night. He must be close to being pitched in from the start for the first team now having come off the bench for their last few games prior to the international break.

An update on Cunninghams progress at Forest. He’s made a good impression and the general consensus is that their is plenty of improvement to come.

‘Queen’s Park Rangers loanee Clint Hill started the win against Middlesbrough at left-back but was recalled by his parent club two days later. Forest moved quickly to fill the continual problem position by bringing in Manchester City youngster Greg Cunningham on loan and he looks a good acquisition. The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international makes the defence naturally balanced and has been solid defensively whilst willing to go forward to support the attack. With Lewis McGugan lining up on the left hand side of midfield, Cunningham has been a useful outlet going forward on the overlap when McGugan drifts into central positions.

The fact Cunningham arrived so quickly is also a positive indicator of the new transfer policy in place at the City Ground, with Frank Clark and Steve Cotterill having greater control over players brought into the club. All too often in recent years, Forest have stuttered in the transfer market or tried to pigeon hole players into positions where they are not best utilised. Hopefully this is now a thing of the past.’

As for other Irish lads, Andy Reid has been fairly shit and is back on the pies. Brendan Maloney wont make the breakthrough in time for Trap. Word is Liam Lawrence will go to Forest in January, will keep an eye on it.

Can you clarify when Andy Reid went off the pies?

You’ve got me there!

some craic on Wallaces facebook page now. people telling him to resign over being more interested in getting his holidays to suit the football and there is more important stuff to worry about. the last comment is ‘shut your fucking mouth, I’m entitled to my opinion.’ kicking off big style.

Is Aindreas (FFS) fighting the good fight for him?
