Ireland politics (Part 1)

A wonderful judge who pushed boundaries and made some great law and then presided over those travesties of justice.

Lesson there somewhere.

Abortion is awful. A woman dying because of a misplaced abortion constitutional prohibition is awful.

I go with trust women not to kill their own babies and they generally don’t. Trust doctors not to want to kill women. Legislate around some extremes.

The only arguments you consider are your religious ones which are evidence free.

They are empowering who lives or doesn’t by engaging in as you call it irresponsible sex. If they didn’t engage in the sex there would be no possibility of that life every living. By engaging in it that life has some possibility of living. So, in reality they are increasing the odds of that life by infinity.

Is what you are saying that asexuality should be a far bigger issue for pro life campaigners than abortion?

I’m saying don’t engage in sex if you’re not prepared to deal with the consequences. Don’t be sobbing when you’re up the duff or have contracted the Aids because you were promiscuous.

Personal responsibility is something we will look back on with fondness. They despise the notion of it and are gradually eroding any need for it in current society.

Thought that the roe Vs Wade crime reduction theory had been discredited

It has. Im not making any comment on the theory either way. Just pointed out it was already out there

Ah saVita, was wondering when this would appear. All to do with the 8th and nothing to do with the appalling lack of basic care she received in UCHG.

The pro life position is irrational, but that’s not surprising given it’s a position taken by people who almost universally believe in made up nonsense. There are about 40 million abortions a year worldwide (a number that’s declining, it was 46 million in 1995), so the pro file argument amounts to there should be another 40 million humans added to the population each year, with no consideration of how to handle that influx. Saying it’s immoral that these potential persons are not born is equivalent to saying abstaining from sex is immoral, only having two kids is immoral, wanking is immoral, etc.

,That whole paragraph is irrational. Abortion should be a last resort. If people who don’t want kids took proper precautions you wouldn’t need 40 million abortions but there’s never any discussion in all this debate about better education or freer access to preventative measures

Better education and access to contraception is the reason levels of abortion are dropping worldwide, yet many of the most extreme pro life nutcases are also opposed to contraception. I think everyone would agree abortion is undesirable, and it is a last resort.

Partly due to reluctance of anybody to make a decision.

You pay for decisions in medical care. Need doctors to be decisive. The legal issues do muddy that. Also the hospital ethos etc

“This is a Catholic country.”

Another one who didn’t read the report

This abortion referendum is going to be so vicious and nasty. Is it going to put the public in danger?
