Ireland politics (Part 1)

The bigger state is great but paying for it is the tricky bit . We are all guilty of thinking someone else should and can pay more tax .

Link not working

The issue in Ireland around increased spending and increase taxes was a lot of the increase was PS wage inflation with little improvement in services. Benchmarking, decentralisation, rationing of services all part of the same employee led approach to public services.

I think people would pay more tax for better services but history suggests we would pay more tax for the same or worse services.

We should reduce capital gains in the short term

I’d be happy to pay more tax.

I wouldn’t.Almost 50% is plenty for me.Thanks.

same here, as long as im getting my tax free allowances and T & S

You’ll do what you’re told. You don’t get top top civil servants like me and Art running the country for peanuts.

What’s your view of the recent efforts at further closing down the city centre to cars?

I am all in favour of it in theory (though I think it is quite mental how the Council can just do what they like during a Pandemic) but I’m worried that we have gone a bit far. Segregated cycle lanes and pedestrianization is brilliant, but there is also the reality that a lot of people don’t want to or can’t cycle. Public transport is seen as dangerous during these times so is not viable for many.

I’m a bit worried that we might be over stepping things here in our glee over the opportunities available to improve our cities.

I guess there is a balance between discouraging lazy cagers and making it run smoothly for people who need cars

Segregated bike lanes are definitely the way forward and the more you build the less cars on the road, whats happening here is happening all over the world so will be the standard I think

I’m mildly uncomfortable with your continued use of the term “segregated”.
I understand what’s being attempted but this is not Alabama or South Africa in bygone days.
A more friendly term would be “designated” or even “official”. The current effort smacks of apartheid.

You probably disapprove the lawn tennis club being called a whites-only club as only white tennis gear can be worn

Isolated would be a better word.
