Political ā€˜earthquakeā€™: major announcement expected from Government at noon

Frantic meetings have been taking place in Government Buildings

A major announcement is now expected to be coming from the Government this morning.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will make the decision known at 12 noon.

The development is believed to centre on the Fine Gael side of the Coalition.

Frantic meetings have been taking place in Government Buildings.

Over the past few months, there has been a focus on the futures of senior leadership figures in the party; Leo Varadkar, Simon Coveney and Paschal Donohoe.

But it is unclear if the decision is related to their futures.

The Cabinet is meeting this morning for the first time since the defeat of the referendum.

Ministers were also away on St Patrickā€™s Day duties last week.

The announcement is not centred on the general election date or the nomination of the next European Commissioner.

Ministers have been alerted to expect the announcement following the Cabinet meeting.

Sources within Government say the decision is of a major magnitude with the phrase ā€œpolitical earthquakeā€ being used.

The Coalition has got less than 12 months left in its term in office.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has to make a decision on when to call it.

The local and European elections will take place the first week of June.

Leo going to go back and do a few shifts in the Mater A&E. He fixed Covid there a few years ago.

Whatā€™s happening? @BruidheanChaorthainn was right. The world is ending.

Varadkar stepping down as leader so a new leader can be in place far enough ahead of the general election late this year?

If Varadkar steps down now itā€™s fairly cowardly. He knows how unpopular both him and his government are but have the guts to face the electorate and stand over your record, however pitiful it may be.

Wonder will he shoehorn in another hilarious reference during his speech as he did during covid.

He never should have went back after making way for Martin.

He has been a very poor leader of FG and the country, the last general election he oversaw FG losing seats and dropping to third place.

He has somehow made FF seem reasonable and electable again. Should never have got into bed with them but power corrupts and all that.

I believe this is health related. Be kind guys.

par for the course

Heā€™s getting a spine inserted.
