Irelands greatest ever Statesman -Martin McGuinness

Isn’t the business School in UL named after Kemmy . Jim was a fascinating character . He was a socialist though and had his own party , the Democrstic Socialist Party. He rejoined the Labour Party which took any bit of socialism out of him .

The Bishop in Limerick…was it Newman? … Hated him.

Yes , so did the Shinners . Probably would be in Joe Higgins crew if alive now .

Bill Clinton will be attending Martin’s funeral.

Is crooked Hillary coming as well?

It is, the Kemmy Business School is a great building out in UL.

Jim Kemmy was ahead of his time…v well regarded by all in Limerick.

Former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Lord Hain in the Paper of Record today recounting how on assuming office in 2005, a mutual love of cricket helped break the ice and build up a good rapport with Martin McGuinness. Lord Hain writes - ‘Incredibly for a hardline Irish republican - and quite unlike his close leadership colleague Gerry Adams accompanying him - he was interested in the Ashes series between England and Australia. It turned out he was also a big fan of the England cricket team, able to recite match statistics and comment expertly on each of their batsmen or bowlers. England’s Ashes victory especially enthralled him’.

Watched Martins speech at the free Derry wall last night it was unreal…very emotional watch.

Heard snippets of a story about Martin in one of the pieces I listened to today. Am, not sure of the exact details, but it went something like this.

A few years back, he and Gerry demanded an audience with some British high ranking official, over a bug they had found in one of their offices. The two boys showed up, package in hand, ready to cut loose. The official, not far from retirement, done his best to dodge the meeting, pass it onto his successor, but the boys were having none of it. And so it was they arrived into his office, and dropped a transmitter onto the desk, and what looked like an aerial wrapped in a paper bag. Yer man opened up the package anyway, and it turned out to be particularly sought after and expensive piece of fly fishing kit, something both he and Martin had a passion for. The boys had a good laugh, wished him all the best and went on their merry way.

I see no reason to believe that didn’t happen.

I wish I could have gone but I will go to the cemetary at Easter time with some lillies and recite a poem at his grave if I can.

Thanks MBB, I really did want to go but I have too much on my plate recently and I just couldn’t fit It in. Today is a very very sad day.

Rest easy in the knowledge that Bertie and Brian Cowen will be there to represent us all.

What can I say to that?

A truly phenomenal turnout for the very sad occasion of the funeral of the great Martin McGuinness, as befits the respect, admiration and love for the man both in his beloved home city of Derry, and across the nation. A very sad week for Derry and a sad week for Ireland.

RTE News Now are covering it live at the moment.
