One of my many gifts and hidden talents.

It was Jim Kemmy that brought down the government in 1982 when he withdrew his support. The electorate in Limerick East turfed Kemmy out of office in the November 1982 election.

I know that chief but it was Brutons vat proposal that made him withdraw his support.
I’ll stand corrected if needs be

Why did the Limerick East electorate turn their back on Jim Kemmy in the November 1982 election?

That I don’t know

Anything to do with Kemmy collapsing the government which in turn resulted in two general elections in 1982?

Kemmy was against the 8th before it was cool and as such was attacked by the church relentlessly. They got him in the end.

This might help

Limerick city seemed to be more in the sway of the church than most other places.

Bastards.

The place is full of churches.

The poverty of the place has a lot to do with it.

Is there still novenas every second week there?

I’d imagine so.

A sort of Mecca effect where the patrons wander across the road afterwards, minds filled with nonsense.

It was also a very socialist city, hard to reconcile the two

Northside of Cork City is like that as well.

Is it not a very divided city though?

Two completely different tribes

I’d say there was a lot of mass going socialists around the place. I know my Limerick citay grandfather for example who was a staunch Kemmy man, was also a mass goer, but I’d say he believed more in the socialism.

As I remember, a number of Independents lost out in that election. There was usually one labour/lefty seat in Limerick. The rest was 2 seats each FF/FG.
