Ireland's Greatest Sporting Moment 1962-2012

Of course but the programme as I understand is Ireland’s Greatest Sporting Moment .

Carey’s point # 1 .

katie taylor had to win just 1 bout to get a medal in the Olympics. They couldnt round up enough ‘women’ to compete and make it a proper championship.
And she was clearly beaten in the final too but the judges got her over the line.
Its really facinating to watch the furore around this media creation. Im actually embarrassed for the lady.

Limerick v Clare 1996 really wasn’t an epic game before the last four or five minutes.

It was a poor to middlin’ game which Clare always looked likely to win.

The game was poor enough albeit a tense contest .

Really ???

Were the pre-Sky Super Sunday 80s/90s much better at producing moments that captured the attention of the whole nation?

The setting for a sporting event greatly affects how people perceive it in later years.

Limerick v Clare was played in intense heat in a packed stadium. Had it been played on a damp, overcast day in front of 38,000 people at Thurles it wouldn’t have had near the same impact on how people remember it.

It’s like how most of the great World Cup matches were played in boiling heat during the daytime in Latin countries, ie. when I think of Italy-Brazil 1982 I think as much of the pokey stadium and the intense heat and the deafening klaxons as much as I think of the incredible drama on the pitch.

Meath Dublin 1991 will surely get a mention

Are you his mother?

If thats the case Offaly v Limerick in '94 will walk this.

Armagh v Tyrone 2005 AI SF was the greatest GAA game of all time.

It was a great game ok but I derived much more enjoyment from the Ulster final replay that year . I was played a Saturday afternoon in croke park and the atmosphere was utter poisonous on the field and in the stands .

Lk played a fine Antrim minor team earlier that day in Parnell Park in quarter final

Possibly, but whatever happened in the Ulster final, the loser was back in again. Having attended both games, the tensions went up another two notches in the semi final.

On that basis Wexford defeating Kilkenny in the the Leinster Championship in 2004 is the greatest sporting moment in the period of time.

The tension yes but the utter poison abated hugely .

if this thing is voted by snowflake hyper sensitive retards on “social media” then the winner will either by CJ stander singing the anthem, anthony foley’s funeral or ireland beating the new zealand in the friendly game last year…

its an improssible competition as those who vote will only vote for the moment that they remember in their lifetime, its a bit like the whole mick mackey or ring were great hurlers when very few can actually compare them to anything today or saw then play

id hazard a guess at a top 3 as it’ll be as politically correct as possible with a huge snowflake element

  1. david o leary v romania - to appease an older generation
  2. a rugby game wither new zealand or a grand slam
  3. katie taylor

1 and 2 are snowflake , una mullaly / @glasagusban generation moan driven

id have alan macloughlin’s goal vs NI as it symbolised everything right about international football with the sheer hatred and poison on the terraces and the audience it captured that night

WC 90 tho probably is it
@Sidney commented here before that this tournament was almost a defining part of irish popular culture in the late 20th century, id agree with him, it was massive

A huge factor in ascertaining the significance of an event of the psyche of a nation / county / community / parish is how many went to work the following day .

Hardly No one we to work the day after the Romania game .
