Golf is as popular, if not more so, than boxing worldwide by every conceivable metric. Why describe one as minority (forgetting about the non sport aspect) and the other not so? Particularly as the Olympics Boxing is amateur and even if one takes the attitude that amateur and pro boxing are very different, you still take a huge pool of available athletes out of the fray- you basically have Cuba, Ireland and Russia where amateur boxing is highly valued.
Golf isn’t a sport mate, seriously, it’s a great game and the top players are very impressive but not a sport, I’m kind of with @Bandage on this.
Why did you leave Barry McGuigan out of your comprehensive list @Fagan_ODowd?
Funny enough in Euro 88 the performance against England was our worst showing . England had a pile of second half chances but Lineker and co kicked the ball at Packie who just made himself big .
That England team were well beaten by CCCP and Netherlands thereafter .
The ROI best showing was against a fine Russian team where we drew 1-1 and were most unlucky not to win .
Probably in GAA the success of the Derry Gaelic team in 1993 , the Offaly hurlers from 1980 to 2000 and Leitrim’s Connaught win in 1994 are remarkable when one considers playing populations .
For me the great moment of Euro 88 was Ronnie Whelan’s goal. You could argue that the England win was a fluke but when that goal went in the thought was “fuck we’re in this”!
Ah no mate, it was a very lucky win, perhaps it would have went differently if we weren’t defending a lead after 6 minutes but on the balance of play 7-1 to England was about right.
