Rathkeale to Fenit

It would have been some gunrunning route back in the day

I struggled to find this one on google maps but the old railway line more or less follows the exist Ring Of Kerry road route. It’ll be fantastic when finished but I’d say it’s going to be one of the more difficult and expensive ones to complete. Lots of houses and the like blocking the old line now.

Michael Healy Rae would sort this in a weekend.

It’ll be spectacular. I saw drone footage of it somewhere at one stage. Goes through mountains and bridges over valleys etc. Be very nice. Hopefully they can link that up to the Fenit to Rathkeale line mentioned above eventually.

cheers mate

@Copper_pipe find this footage please

It would be a great trip if you could cycle from the Ring of Kerry to Galway city and had the choice between going up the greenways from Limerick City up through East Clare or staying along the Wild Atlantic way.

as good a place as any for this

But if could extend it from Youghal to Dungarvan you’d be happy I’d say.

cheers mate

Dont think there was a train line between these two towns so it would be a much bigger undertaking.

Going to be a right pain in the arse for the cyclists when the Greens need to put Hyperloop tracks in where the railways used to be.

The one that always intrigued me, the one I heard most about when I came to Limerick first was the Old West Clare Railway. Percy French, are you right there Michael are you right? And all that.

I worked with some lads who walked it regularly. The were members of the Limerick Climbing and Crochet Club. They are still going but I don’t think they do much crochet now. Not surprising the further west you get the easier it is to walk. Lots of the other sections are closed off or built on now.

You could walk to Cappoquin and get a boat down the river then to Youghal.

A fairly up to date map of where we are now.
