Herring fisheries were absolute massive in Ireland around the 1600’s.
What happened them? Over fishing?

I remember watching an irish language doc on TG4 about the famine well over a decade ago and it maintained that the average Irish male ate 2 kgs* of potatoes a day and we were of similar size/proportions to the modern day Afrikaans in pre famine times.

The doc speculated that part of the reason for such a slow response from Britian was due to their ignorance and a prevailing opinion that they mountainy men could do with losing a few pounds

*Maybe it was less, but the boys were horsing them into themselves 3 times a day

I’m not sure but fishing rights were probably reduced also by access when the landlord system sprang up … Like all those golf courses denying poor surfers access to the beach.

They made a mix of spud, egg and milk I think. Nearly everything you need

Right enough…there was some sort of alchemy that involved mixing buttermilk and sphuds. It released all sorts of nutrients that weren’t available otherwise. It mightn’t qualify for cuisine though

No, just existence.

The foraging is a dying art alright. When we were young people foraged blackberries, rose hips, haws, the wild garlic, crab apples and chestnuts. In Woodstown people went out from the city everyday and picked periwinkles and ate them with a pin. Dillisk was a very popular snack. Young lads used to fish for eels near the bridge in the Quay river and bring them home to their Mams to cook. There were massive amounts of eels down where the blood used to discharge into the river from the abattoir. They’d curl up lovely in the pan.

I remember lads out eel fishing around Limerick alright back in the 80s/90s. Down by the abbey / the island field mainly. All gone I’d say.

Sure people look at you like you’re some class of a weirdo now if they see you out picking blackberries or crab apples. They’d prefer to spend 5 euro buying a punnet of tasteless blackberries shipped in from Morocco.
