Saying that Lankum don’t have the instrumental dexterity of the Dubliners is laughable tbf… I think the Dubliners are serious but that’s not an an argument I’d make.

A lot of this “New Irish Folk” is abysmal and people shouldn’t be bullied into being afraid to call it out for what it is. Music for a very narrow subset of hipsters that drains the joy out of the music. Music that gets vastly more coverage than its popular appeal deserves.
Also Coulter is a cunt but he is correct to say that Lankum are more in the style of Planxty than the Dubliners. I would have thought that is an uncontroversial observation.

I’d agree Lankum are a hard listen but The Mary Wallopers have great spirit and attitude to them. With irish folk music that’s half the battle and Sheehan should know that.

Mary wallpapers and lankum are the on the absolute opposite ends of the drain the joy out of it spectrum. id personally prefer the wallpapers approach but there’s a place for both approaches though surely.
Sheahan is surely entitled to his opinion too and it was hardly that critical for the mary wallopers to get that touchy.
