Ineligible, it’s a Scottish song
I think I posted this up on here before
McAlpine’s Fusileers. Superb.
Can’t find a proper version of it though.
Saw that show on RTE last night about the folk songs. Each song murdered by those who covered it. Villager O’Brien butchered Raglan road. I’ve heard these songs so many times, so many versions mauled, shite singers, shite players, over the years, that I found it hard to listen to them again last night mauled on tv.
The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, Paul Brady’s version of Arthur McBride and the Andy Irvine’s version of the West Coast of Clare are my favourite folk songs.
Thanks fuck that ape Damien Dempsey wasn’t on roaring and bawling in mono syllables…
The band played waltzing Matilda would have been an odd choice.
I prefer Now I’m easy if it’s Eric Bogle songs we’re judging
Shane is great but Liam Clancy does that much better
Clancy’s was the best version IMHO.
Whatever wins it should be a version by Liam Clancy or Luke Kelly. Everyone else can fuck off.
The Cocky Farmer is the title. It is a great great song.
I love a bit of real misery in a folk song, Christ that lad had it tough
I married a fine girl when I was twenty
But she died in giving birth when she was thirty
No flying doctor then, just a gentle old black 'gin
But it’s nearly over now, and now I’m easy
She left me with two sons and a daughter
On a bone-dry farm whose soil cried out for water
So my care was rough and ready, but they grew up fine and steady
But it’s nearly over now, and now I’m easy
My daughter married young, and went her own way
My sons lie buried by the Burma Railway
Chevron’s finest moment
I would probably go as far as to say Irish music’s finest moment.
I heard these lads singing this in the opera house, Belfast circa 1980. Absolutely sublime. Tommy knew all the words on the night.

I wouldn’t argue with you.
That and A Pair of Brown Eyes are in my mind masterpieces, and while I’d prefer the latter, Thousands speaks more of the Irish experience
My uncle used sing with Makem a bit in the 60s and 70s. Used to appear on a TV show with him in Canada in the 70s.
Would you have an oul come-all-ye or two yourself?
