Thanks, I either didn’t know that or long forgot it. Donogh O’Malley was one of the few to be proud of in a litany of useless hoors of all flavors in the history of the state. A whole generation of rural Irish owe their education to him, a true progressive for his time. I’ll raise a glass to him tonight.
It wouldn’t be my favourite but I thought it would win.
I voted for “The Rocky Road to Dublin”.
I heard this in a bar in NYC few months ago. Blew me away
A song for James Connolly
Thousands are Sailing by the Pogues is the best Irish folk song for me.
Of that list I would agree with @balbec and go for Rocky Road to Dublin.
The Town I Loved So Well is probably the worst Irish folk song.
“Only a woman’s heart” is on the list FFS.
Raglan Road by a whisker ahead of the Rocky Road on that list for me.
The Shamrock Shore is my Irish tune of the moment after Horslips’ version came up on Spotify:
Hardly surprising really, women are people too, that was massive
It’s important to be reminded of this from time to time.
That song is very sexist though
It’s an awful dirge
Tis fairly bad alright but it kind of brought Irish music to the forefront in its own way, anybody remember that great documentary series ‘bringing it all back home’ from the same time?
I remember it was good, but can’t remember who was on it. Emy Lou Harris?
Everybody who was anybody, Luka Bloom really stood out for me, and Paul Brady doing ‘nothing but the same old story’
Right enough!
Before the deluge*
The belltable**
Raglan Road (dubliners)
Thousands are sailing
Dublin in the rare oul times
*may not be a folk song, but womans heart sure as hell isn’t.
**not a song
Not a folk song imho
I’ve just arrived home after two weeks away, enjoying listening to the south wind blows here on Radio 1
Have a listen to John Spillane I rate him, others can’t stand him, but live he really entertains
