I wouldnât agree due to the fact that the political mood of a nation can change over time so it would be undemocratic to exclude someone from the process. The people have the right to choose on each and every occasion.

The Seanad is used by parties generally as a halfway house for TDs/MEPs who lose their seats until the next election or elevating a councillor to build their profile ahead of the next election. Itâs a joke of a system.
However, what has gone completely over your head is the fact that if someone has served multiple terms in the Seanad while running in General and European elections then they really should consider their political career. Some of them are happy to suckle at the teat for as long as they can, like Bacik.
The Seanad needs to go.
I think itâs ridiculous that someone like Bacik who feels local politics are beneath her and has consistently failed to be elected by her constituents at general and European level has been able to milk the state for over a million in that time.

Sheâs found a little niche in the Seanad being elected as a university rep while teaching there. Sheâll retire with a massive pension off the back of it and for what.
Itâs a bigger issues than her though. A large part of annoyance with career politicians who only want to be elected in Seanad or Dail is the pension. Almost no other job pays a pensions nearly as generous and even if it does you wait to 65
Add that to people in teaching or other posts kept open while they are in Dail and itâs a kleptocracy

Do LIT students get a Seanad vote now they are a proper University?
I wouldnât agree with that as a bicameral democracy is essential to hold up the checks and balances required for passing legislation effectively and honestly.
The whole Oireachtas needs a massive overhaul as weâre over represented, should only be around 100 TDs, and the House which should be focusing on legislative issues (the DĂĄil) spends too many time dealing the regional issues that could be sorted out properly running Co Councillors.
Iâve been saying for a long time that we shoul donly have one TD per constituency, they would have to represent the needs of all their constituents in the Dail, giving us 39 TDs I think.
The remainder elected using the List system. Basically on an election day you would vote for the constituency candidate on one ballot and on another, the party of your choice. In this scenario from the remaining 61 or so seats each party given the amount that matches the amount of votes that they got on the second ballot. SF would have been a big winner using this in 2020.
People would have to consider the policies of each party a helluva lot more using this was and itâs done liek that in Belgium I think, I am open to correction on that though.

I wouldnât be a huge fan of Bacik but she has strong and principled positions, is an intellectual, and is an expert. It is good for Ireland that there is a place for her in politics. Saying she should be a councillor is bizarre really, I donât think thereâs any need to talk about that. I do think the Seanad needs reform in how people are elected to it but it is important in scrutinising legislation. Basik sees it as a place where she can advance her ideals, she has been repeatedly elected to it to do that under the system thatâs in place. Fair play to her.

Kitchen island ownership rates are over 90% amongst UL Graduates. Thatâs the only metric that counts.
Why? Is it beneath her to be a councillor?
Would it beneath her to represent her constituents on community issues? Or is she only interested in state banquets, meet dignitaries and the like?
You seem to propose a very elitist line. Have you something against the working class?
She is a legal academic and practicing barrister. She is a expert in criminology, human rights and equality issues.
Where do you think her expertise is better suited, the Seanad or a local council?

I donât think she is suited for politics as she is a parasite who is elected to a parasitic job, has leached off the state for 15 years and is elected via an elitist system.

Pearse Doherty was elected to the Seanad via the âAgricultural Panelâ, which is voted in by current councillors and Oireachtas members. Now thatâs an elitist system.
The two roles are like chalk and cheese.
The Seanad deals with legislative issues on a National scale.
Co Council is to manage of the area at the local level. Specifically, Councils are required to: act as a representative, informed and responsible decision-maker in the interests of its community.
The Dail is a mix of both but more legislative. Comparing the work of a Senator and the work of a Co Councillor is like comparing a Judge/Lawyer and a School Principal.
