The 57-58 season was won by Ton Pentre and the 58-59 season was won by Abergavenny Thursdays. I’d say the Welsh Domestic League was some sight in those days.

I read that particular piece of information about Eire before the 2014 World Cup. Both of the two new participants in 2018, Panama and Iceland had squad members from their domestic leagues.

Wales had any number of players in their squad on their lone appearance in 1958 playing for Cardiff City and Swansea City including two of their top players Ivor Allchurch and Mel Charles.

I took the liberty of looking up the position pertaining to Canada. Canada’s goalkeeper for their opening match against France at the 1986 World Cup, their lone World Cup appearance, Paul Dolan was playing for the Edmonton Brickmen.

Eire has just 6 of their squad of 22 at the 1990 World Cup born in Eire. In 1994 it was up by just 1 to 7. Not a single player over those two World Cups drawn from a club in the Eire domestic league. Wales had 8 players from a squad of 22 at the 1958 World Cup from Swansea and Cardiff City in their domestic league. There’s probably someone here cracked enough to check it out but I’d imagine, nearly all of that Welsh squad in 1958 were Welsh born. The Tottenham Hotspur trio of Mel Hopkins, Terry Medwin and Cliff Jones were all Welsh born and bred anyway.
