I think Whelan can. I think most of Whelanâs limitations are on the ball. And being asked or deciding to play too close to his back 4. But thereâs no reason he shouldnât be able to follow Eriksen around.
Unfortunately Eriksen is unlikely to stay still so Whelan would have to leave the middle to follow him around and that leaves us exposed. So I think Whelan needs to be told to play in that area or to just stick with Eriksen. Not both. That means Arter would have to be better at holding the middle and being available for the ball from the back 4.
He has alright. But thatâs why itâs important heâs asked to do one of two things - protect the back 4 or follow Eriksen. He canât do both unless Eriksen is very naive.
Iâd just have him sit and let Arter follow Eriksen. We need a goal I think. Donât think we will hold them scoreless in Dublin. Tactics to be a carbon copy of Cardiff. Closed shop for an hour and then try nick one. All well and good if we donât concede in the first hour. I know itâs a âJohnny Gilesâ comment but the first 20 is key. Welsh had us on the rack for the first twenty. You could see the crowd and players getting more and more anxious as time went on.
Thing is, Wales are shit and these lads will have a bit more nous and playing ability. Weâve been riding our luck, have a bad feeling about this, especially if Whelanâs playing.
I woke up with the same feeling. Our back 4 defended unreal in Cardiff but are pretty average especially our 2 full backs. Thatâs why Meylers loss is crucial
Good piece here. I think this is how weâll set up and aim to contain them but, as mentioned, Iâm not confident that a Whelan-Arter combination is capable of doing it.
Now i am aware of the lack of preparation MON does so this wonât happen and its unlikely the coaching is set up to do this.
But the ideal scenario in this case is analysis is done on what area of field he does certain things from and when he enters an area a player or any of a few players perform a certain role. Know where to leave him have it, learn when to tackle, what areas to shadow, close down, track his runs etc.
But they would always have to be coached in such manner to just do it this week.
But getting the least conditioned guy we have in to mark one of the most technical excellent players in Europe is madness.
Syds is just down from the parade on your left heading towards Johnâs bridge. Itâs a grand boozer and well suited to a man of your vintage. They will have the game on but no big screens. or the match loko_coves suggestions were decent and if I had to pick one I would go to the rather Dempseys. Should have a good match atmosphere and not be as messy as a lot of other places.
You canât go wrong in Syds. Was my local for years. @Bandage when you order a drink, be prepared to be asked about four times what your order was. "Speedy"behind the bar wouldnât be the quickest. Myself and the wife were in there a few years ago. We were the only people there at the time and 4 (four) times he asked us what we wanted.
Eriksen is a good player. Heâs not one of the most technically excellent players in Europe. Man marking is a real thing. You should watch more football.
Also your âsophisticatedâ analysis about defending differently in different areas of the pitch is Under 9s level. Thatâs not to say itâs irrelevant but please refrain from presenting it as complex or mentally challenging. Martin OâNeill will have coached a team before.
I never said it was sophisticated, to me it was the obvious way to play a technically gifted player like this with the players Ireland possess.
Yes man marking is a real thing, we just do not seem to have anyone at the required level with those attributes, discipline or conditioning to shut down Erikson. Hence why its a stupid suggestion given without any thought.
Martin OâNeill is only in the position he is in cos he was a famous player. He managerial style was probably more than adequate back in the late 90âs when players were still coming thru with street smarts and good drive and reasonable technical ability and prep was different. He clearly has motivational skills. But his tactics and coaching is just around about the u9âs level you suggest.
Now if you know somebody teaching 9 year olds to man mark then i suggest you have a word with them and tell them to consider another hobby.
However if the Irish players are not familiar, as many recent Irish players have suggested, with coming into camp and doing detail analysis on opposition then it may be a negative to start it all of a sudden and obviously MON is a mule and wonât change. So it would be very mentally challenging for the Irish players, or at least a good shot of them.
He has done ok. But we actually now have more EPL players than i can remember for a good while. And some technically decent lads and of course we are carrying a few. We should be doing better overall and i think MON is the wrong man for this team. But thats for another day.
