Never saw them live. I was too interested and stuck listening to awful bands like Megadeth to appreciate the proper music going on around me at the time. I suppose due to my age, they only popped up on my radar in 1989. Flicking around on Spotify now listening to their earlier stuff. I know it gets mixed reviews, but I like Up. I am the Lotus is a cracking tune. New Adventures took a while. Long album, but some great stuff on it.
Nothing wrong with a bit of Mustaine mate.
Ah in fairness, listening back, a lot of it is shit, and his lyrics were/are woeful.
Radio Free Europe came up randomly on my IPhone yesterday. Struck me that even at that early age how mature Stipes voice was. Really helped them stand out from the crowd.
The last time I saw REM live was in the RDS in 1989 when they had learned to put on a show. What a show.
Previously I had seen them support U2 in Croke Park. It wasnât their scene then really. They were an introverted indie band incapable of filling a stadium sound.
A song about Cold War propaganda. Up there with Morrissey and Marr singing about the Moors Murders with their first song.
Heard about that one. Stipe didnât look at the crowd throughout?
Wore a big black topcoat which he pulled up over his head and sang from under it for the whole show.
Marley Park was it? They played Exhuming McCarthy same evening too which was a great treat.
Had to look that up. Turns out Exhuming McCarthy was played the second night. I got Radio Free Europe instead so was happy out
Agree with you on Up. Some very good stuff on it. Both it and Ok Computer have a lot of lyrical content around transportation which I find fascinating.
I was obviously at second night so.
I think they were both touring together around the time those albums came out.
Yes just beforehand. Radiohead supported them on Monster.
Oasis pre selling out supported them in slane, they were brilliant
The hipsters probably donât like Out of Time
I see BBC just showed the REM Glastonbury gig from 1999. They also showed Radiohead from 1997 which I didnât know was on so missed it.
watching
this is superb
Live in the Point 2005 on TG4, superb.
