@BruidheanChaorthainn humanity is pretty much fucked. Within 20 years we’ll have 6 billion people on the planet with no jobs. Pretty much everything you can think of is going to be replaced by machines and AI. I’d say only about 20% of the people will have any meaningful employment.
Microsoft have laid off another raft of people this week. These aren’t low level drone jobs either.
Skilled tradesmen will absolutely clean up. The Keybosrd boys and spreadsheet jockeys will be all on the dole. Any lad that knows how to do a bit of plumbing, trace wires, even point natural stone will be the new upper middle class. The teacher, the solicitor, even the doctor will be quaint memories of a by-gone era.
The whole ‘war on woke’/Brexit/‘culture wars’ shite was got up as a deflection from these realities. AI will mean much higher profits due to steeply cut labour costs. AI wil be the ultimate in neoliberal globalism.
Probably the only possible solution is much higher taxes on much higher profits so as to give everyone a universal income to a certain level. But try selling that one to the Elon Musk fanboys and kangoheads.
Try asking Farage and Tice and all the other grifters what AI will do to the ‘little people’ that are their base. Yeah.
I called it a few years ago. Those self service machines should have been banned in centra. I point blank refuse to use them. It’s a job of that ilk where a lot of people get their start. I’m sure centra and Tesco have plenty of profits to pay leaving certs a few quid.
I’m half thinking of doing a course in TV Aerial Installation and setup. There’s a fierce shortage around here of lads to do menial jobs like that and all the auld folks love having “The Saorview”.
15 calls a week at 100 a pop shoulf be enough to keep the wolf from the door
Massively. You can see the shift in the spiel already towards ‘context engineering’ as the skill of the future. In other words knowing where the platform actually lives and connects to the real world and does something useful. CEOs getting very excited because they created an ‘app’ on Bolt in 2 minutes that does a sum total of fuck all.
It certainly has cool applications and it can remove a lot of stuff that wastes time. But I don’t see any prospect of it ever replacing the need for real engineers, at least not in this form.
I heard from a US-based colleague (originally of Hyderabad Gaels) that a huge amount of h1b’s are already within green card territory so there’s obviously enough of a pool to choose from to avoid too much pushback from the top dogs.
There are over 1 million Indian nationals waiting on Green Cards at the minute, could take 10-20 years for some of them to be processed as the US have it capped at around 150k a year.
This could lead to huge growth in Ireland assuming we had the infrastructure to handle it, which we don’t.
