Not sure whelan played many of the qualifiers did he? He was captain of Liverpool when they won cup in 92 so obviously wasnt finished or anything in 1990. Dunphy was definitely raging Townsend on ahead of him.

I used to think the players dunphy championed the most were always irish born. He definitely had a thing about Jack and the plastic paddies. The anti dunphy thing at the time was a real measure of jacks popularity. I remember seeing a wanted sign for dunphy behind the bar in a pub when I went in for coke and crisps after mass. ‘Crimes against the Irish nation’ . Immortalised by Roddy Doyle too. The contrarian stuff dunph went on with would be par for the course nowadays. He was the original tfker

Iirc we lead 3 - 1 . I think Bonner was losing confidence and Brady dropped him around that time .

Vaguely . I remember beating the Rooskies at Lansdowne ( Micky Walsh ??) and the whole thing petered out after that . I remember a bad hiding off the great Denmark team at Lansdowne. I attended that .

That was the first international game I ever went to but I was too young to remember any of it.

The Scotland home game for Euro 88 I was sitting in the classroom (2nd class I think) and there was a knock at the door. My Dad standing there asking to take me out of class so I could go and watch us at Lansdowne.

they’d have had a decent team then tho, im thinking a lot of that aberdeen 1983/ dundee united 1985 sides with lads like charlie nicholas, macstay, aitken, macavennie,gary mackay was a diet hun afaik
