Job Interviews

Be nice to the receptionist when you sign in.

I got a job that involved speaking German on phone calls. I can’t speak German but had my leaving cert results on my CV. Somehow blagged an incredibly basic phone interview auf Deutsch and got the job.

18 months of answering every call with “Sprechen Sie Englisch?” followed.

it’s not a place to air grievances. the interview should have been stopped there and then and he should have been brought into a disciplinary

Does your CV include a spell with the Stasi?

you think it’s ok to insult two lads who are only doing their jobs trying to interview you?

I’ve never in my life gone through a recruitment agency

I did get one good job through them, but all of the other times have been dodgy, where I wonder what the heck they told the companies when I went for the interview.
I’ve had some interviews where I thought “what the hell am I doing here?”

how many jobs have you had, not part time jobs now. Actual jobs?

Wouldn’t they have had to give him the job first?

it was a promotion interview.

You shut up with your facts and logic

Ok guys - you can stop measuring dicks now and get back on topic.

Would you say you can handle a high pressure situation?

If you’re parroting something you’ve read in a newspaper about an area you don’t work in, what else is it?

If I was interviewing the chap I wouldn’t be inclined to press him on it either. I’d have him marked down as an unguarded and snide cunt who is slating the place he wants to work in and isn’t worth the effort.

that’s a yes or no answer. they won’t ask that.

They’ll ask how do you handle high stress/pressure situations.

Is that a conflict question or a time management question?

neither. It’s a question to see what stresses you out and how you’d cope with, in a hypothetical sense of course.

In reality, me, I write a resignation letter and log off for a few weeks.

I applied for a job in a large company one time, that I was well qualified for, and their internal recruiter came back and said that role is filled but I think you’d be a great fit for a different role.

Anyway she sent me on the spec, rang me back and said what do you think, I said it looks interesting but I don’t have any experience in it. She goes oh it’s a very niche role, no one really has experience and we’ll provide training for the right candidate, the hiring team aren’t really expecting you to have knowledge etc. But I think your other experience is exactly what they’re looking for. Grand I said I’ll meet them. I wasn’t really sure myself if I’d any interest, but said I’d go along with it and see what happened.

In I rocked to the interview and the guy goes I’ve looked at your CV and you’ve no experience in this role, why did you even apply for this job basically. He was nice about it in fairness.
I told him the story with the internal recruiter and he looked at me baffled. We basically left it at that and I was out the door again within 5 minutes. A surreal experience.

Once they see your CV photo with the gomey head it goes straight to the bin.

I had the same experience last year. A job came up, and I told the recruitment agency that I was interested but didn’t have experience in a, b and c so didn’t think I’d be a good fit for the interview.
They got back to me and told me the company wanted to see me anyway, so in I went to the interview, and the interviewer asked me about a, b and c, and noted I had no experience.
I went home wondering why I was sent there at all. Some colleague of the agent I was dealing with rang me for a follow up, and I never heard from the agency again, not even a “you didn’t get the job, better luck next time”.

When did knowing anything about a particular department stop anyone getting promoted above their station in the public sector? While this chap was slightly aloof, he was/is a highly intelligent individual and wasn’t taking cheap shots. A brave manager would take him on, a spineless one would go for the cap doffer.

Neary’s performance at the banking enquiry indicates the management style in operation at the time. A style which you appear to agree with.
