Joe Canning, Unquestionably the GOAT

Did Brian Corcoran only become a great in 99?

Cough

Depends what your version of “greatness” means. His status was certainly less pre-1999 than it was post-1999.

Either way it makes shit of @anon25556527’s argument since Callanan cannot truly be judged yet in any event.

To people not watching him maybe. His fame seemed to increase with coming back and playing full forward. He was unbelievable on his own when clare and Limerick were dominant. Arguably the best player in the country. Maybe the fact there was quite a few really top no.6’s at the time dilutes any of their individual greatness. He was great before 99.
What he showed in the come back was his brain and his flexability

A comeback like that was largely unheard of at the time. First to come back, second to play a completely different role. That captures the imagination and certainly adds to his greatness.

If Brian Corcoran had done nothing post-1998, would he have been a great?

Eugene Cloonan was the best forward in Ireland from 1999 to 2001 inclusive with the exception of DJ Carey.

Is he a great?

It did, but i still remember him as a No.6.

Maybe its a generational thing

2 years? Corcoran was a great by 98. Thats what i am saying.

Maybe you should just let the Brian Corcoran thing go. You were wrong, deal with it.

you dimit I’ve consistently said canning could become a great but hasn’t as of yet.

1999 to 2001 is three seasons, not two.

Corcoran played, what, 11 championship games from 1992 to 1998 inclusive?

He would have been regarded as a very good hurler prior to 1999, but a great?

I doubt it.

You need more to achieve greatness.

I think it’s fair to say he would have been regarded as a great after 1999, but not before it.

Cloonan won three All-Ireland club championships and a National League title from 1997-2001 as well as being one of the game’s top forwards in that time, but I wouldn’t regard him as a great.

Is @anon32894817 old enough to remember 1999?

Not the 99 version the first all Ireland I remember is 03

So great you forget the players names & need a program at club games?

Youre beating this drum a long time. After being abroad for a stretch and seeing a minor team game for the first time, yeah, that’ll happen.

Excuses…

I remember watching Clare v Cork in 1998. Clare gave Cork such a chasing that they had run Brian Corcoran to a standstill. I remember thinking that if they could reduce a great of the game to that they must be a great team.

He would in cork anyways we wouldnt give a tuppeny wank what the rest of ye would think

I thought people in Cork and Kerry used to pride themselves on saying that if a player didn’t have at least five All-Irelands they couldn’t be a great?

Standards had really slipped if a player who didn’t win a championship match in six years was classed as a great.
