John Delaney/ tugging off half the forum

Go on. When were Sunderland in financial ruin?

He spent a shit load of money on shit players on big contracts who the club could not shift. They had to amortise these players for years after the mess he made and were effectively a selling club in this time. Sunderland have been hamstrung financially since Keane left.

@Fagan_ODowd do you recall Quinn presenting some business advisory programme on RTE 1 in the mid to late 90s? Was on after Coronation Street if I recall correctly

Keane spent 80 million on 39 players as Sunderland manager. 39 players.

When was this financial ruin you spoke of?

Sunderland spent Ā£40m on players the year after Roy Keane left so I think hamstrung is a bit of a fabrication

The wage bill more than doubled in his 2 years in the job.

Because they had to pay Premiership wages maybe? ffs

That would be standard going from the bottom of the championship to a second season in the PL.

I thought that would be quiet good for a team going from championship to Premier league?

Exactly. Roy Keane obviously signed a lot of poor players at Sunderland but blaming him and Quinn for a ā€œfinancial ruinā€ that never happened and a relegation 10 years later is a bit weird

Sunderland are on the brink of going bust

Incorrect. They has a higher wage bill in the Championship than the EPL under McCarthy.

How is it weird? They have effectively been a selling club due to the losses incorporated after his reign. Do some research.

Keane took over after the opening 6 games when the transfer window was shut if Iā€™m not mistaken.

They are now. Thatā€™s because Ellis Short finally gave up and their new owner has very little money by football owner standards

Keane managed to more than double the wage bill in 2 years. They had a higher wage bill in the Championship than in the Premier League the prior season.

Either way keane is not responsible for Sunderlands trouble. Steve Bruce was a disaster.

When were they a selling club? They almost always spent more than they brought in on players

Sure keane would have had very little to do with that. They were promoted in his first season.

@mikehunt the auditors are out again
