Jonathan Sexton Concussion Watch

Ringrose or Keenan at 10? Ok, you have completely left the reservation. Also ringrose doesnā€™t even have the hands for centre let alone 10.

Carberry must wonder what he has to do to get a shot.

Thereā€™ll be more than 15 kiwis starting this weekend. Canā€™t be fair on Ireland.

Thereā€™s only 14 kiwis starting actually and likelihood is the game will finish with 11 or 12 kiwis on the pitch.

Ya, thatā€™s a bit out there alright I must admit

We counting for both teams in total, or just for Ireland?

Both teams.

Sounds like an improvement

But the lad is happy to keep playing so what do you do if he is cleared to play. Heā€™s in a different category to to the likes of Carl Hayman and Steve Thompson. Heā€™s literally playing a different game. He might get 5 dints in a game. Their job was to take a dunt every time they were on the ball and to dunt the opposition every time they had the ball. Itā€™s perfectly possible that he will be grand when he retires.

A rugby man was telling me yesterday that Sexton has a good record on the concussion front since his break while he was at Racing Metro. It felt like a bit of deflection though tbh.

Agreed. Iv a bigger issue with them flogging him when it actually suits us better to try someone else. Iā€™m absolutely certain Johnny is getting his own medical advice here and he is a big boy to make these decisions in face of a lot more knowledge than any of us

Its not a good luck for the sport the way the HIA is assessed. It seems to be at total odds with the way it is policed in NFL where you are basically ruled out when you go to blue tent more out of precaution than anything. There have been a number of early retirements in NFL due to concussion issue most notably Luke Kuechly who was an All pro and rookie of year year and defensive player of the year. He only made just over 1,000 tackles in his career. If you get a couple of bad ones you just seem to be more and more susceptible to them. With Thompson and Hayman it was all those micro impacts over the years which went undetected. Not too dissimilar to repeated heading of the old mitre footballs back in the day which left some footballers with dementia and other cognitive impairments. Sexton is really walking a tightrope regarding his personal health and I wouldnā€™t be surprised if he was ignoring all advice to continue playing.

Interestingly there is no HIA at any level below professional in rugby. At amateur and schools levels any bang to the head that would warrant a HIA (at referee discretion) you are straight off and stood down for 21 days. Strictly enough enforced in my experience as referees are personally liable for player safety

Johnny just going through his night-before-the-match routine here.

I saw numerous head injuries at AIL last season where the players were left play on clearly worse for wear.

Iā€™d have the opposite opinion of you- it is not policed to the level it should be at AIL/amateur level.

Not good enough. Buck stops with the coaches IMVHO. I hope I never get that caught up in a game that I wouldnā€™t do the right thing

Thatā€™s the problem tho. Players can have too much sway with their coaches/team doctor.

An independent medic to take the emotional attachment out of the decision-making. Local unaffiliated GP, hundred quid per team pre-match would go a long way towards player safety

You would be doing well to root out the few hundred GP s every weekend to do it but I get the point.
