I seem to remember a debate being had about 25 years ago regarding the Fitzpatricks (Cha et al.) and whether they should be playing for Mullinavat or Ballyhale, do you recall that? (I may have asked you about this before)
The Fitzpatricks’ postal address is ‘Knockmoylan, Mullinavat, County Kilkenny’. But the townland of Knockmoylan is in the parish of Ballyhale since 1847 and so there was no ambiguity whatsoever. The first Ballyhale native to win a Celtic Cross, Pat ‘Dexter’ Aylward in 1922, was from the house across the road from the Fitzpatricks.
Cha’s father, Ned, won a Junior County Final in 1965 with Knocktopher. His midfield partner was Frank Cummins. Ned captained the Kilkenny Minors in 1966.
The parish boundary is the stream, the Derrylacky, that runs under the bridge before Reade’s pub. The first Mullinavat townland, there, is Lukeswell. Over to the west it is Killeen. Further west again, it is Knockbrown, where Liam Fennelly built his house.
Frank Cummins was an unused sub in 1967; Paul Phelan, an unused sub in 1993. The other 27 times, the parish had at least one man starting. The parish has provided a winning captain nine times, which is a record in the county.
I think you mean Mick Doyle – father of Richie Doyle, I am fairly sure. He won a Junior All Ireland with Kilkenny in 1982 and 1984.
There were two Mick Doyles hurling with Barrow Rangers during the 1980s. If memory serves, they were Mick Doyle (The Hill) and Mick Doyle (Garryduff). The latter man is the one who got some airtime with Kilkenny.
