Would the city boys dish out timber in return ???

We would in our fuck. These were big strapping sons of farmers. We were thin and wiry bread and cake eating townies.

That’s exactly what I keep saying. Joke of a sport

I seem to remember a debate being had about 25 years ago regarding the Fitzpatricks (Cha et al.) and whether they should be playing for Mullinavat or Ballyhale, do you recall that? (I may have asked you about this before)

That’s an incredible record in fairness

The Fitzpatricks’ postal address is ‘Knockmoylan, Mullinavat, County Kilkenny’. But the townland of Knockmoylan is in the parish of Ballyhale since 1847 and so there was no ambiguity whatsoever. The first Ballyhale native to win a Celtic Cross, Pat ‘Dexter’ Aylward in 1922, was from the house across the road from the Fitzpatricks.

Cha’s father, Ned, won a Junior County Final in 1965 with Knocktopher. His midfield partner was Frank Cummins. Ned captained the Kilkenny Minors in 1966.

The parish boundary is the stream, the Derrylacky, that runs under the bridge before Reade’s pub. The first Mullinavat townland, there, is Lukeswell. Over to the west it is Killeen. Further west again, it is Knockbrown, where Liam Fennelly built his house.

Frank Cummins was an unused sub in 1967; Paul Phelan, an unused sub in 1993. The other 27 times, the parish had at least one man starting. The parish has provided a winning captain nine times, which is a record in the county.

I think you mean Mick Doyle – father of Richie Doyle, I am fairly sure. He won a Junior All Ireland with Kilkenny in 1982 and 1984.

There were two Mick Doyles hurling with Barrow Rangers during the 1980s. If memory serves, they were Mick Doyle (The Hill) and Mick Doyle (Garryduff). The latter man is the one who got some airtime with Kilkenny.

He’s Tom alright, Diarmuid is a first cousin of Eddie. Diarmuid’s brother played U21 for KK, think he won an all-ireland

Good sorts. Probably had a few pucks with those young lads back in the day when we were visiting.

I remember playing De La Salle in Walsh Park in a Waterford city league final. We didn’t dish out any hammerings that day

Ger Aylward retired. Only 28 or so. Was it injuries or lack of interest that made his mind up? Or did Cody drop the axe!

I think Ger’s inability to score, or indeed strike the ball properly probably hindered him.

Axed along with Bill Sheehan

Sounds very much to me, reading this, that repeated inbreeding is finally going to drag kk hurling down.

Ger Aylward: dropped.

Bill Sheehan: dropped.

Paul Murphy: told to retire.

Thomas Kenny: has dropped himself off panel.

Bigger stories to come in next few days.
