Charlie Purcell was another very good Barrow Rangers hurler late 80’s who was on the fringes of the county set up. Very good Fitzgibbon Cup hurler with UCD. Think he spent a good bit of time abroad with work which effectively ruled out any prospects of a senior inter-county career.
Why were Aylward and Murphy announcing retirement statements, was it for self gratification?! If they were dropped why don’t they put that in their statement “look, I wanted to hurl on but I was dropped and at my age I’ll hardly be back so it’s best that I retire”
Absolutely. Nothing wrong with the announcements from those lads.
Paul Murphy in my book was one of the best corner backs of all time when at the peak of his powers. Absolutely miles a better player than Tyrell. Super hurler, but didn’t seem to have the longevity of others.
Would I be far off in predicting CF & RH will get the road/walk of their own accord over the next week…
Five called up: David Blanchfield (Bennettsbridge), Darragh Corcoran (Ballyhale Shamrocks), Eoin Guilfoyle (James Stephens), Aidan Nolan (Dicksboro), Eoin O’Shea (OLG).
Cian Kenny (James Stephens) already in there, since before 2020 AI semi final. Brian Cody (Ballyhale Shamrocks), older brother of Eoin, was also in helping with training numbers.
Paul Murphy was excellent for a while (if always headless with clearances). Never much played well, though, after 2015 Leinster Final. Poor in 2015 AIF, for instance.
I am not into predictions on sensitive subjects. We will have to wait and see.
Yeah, I suppose the criticism would be the longevity of his career. His use of the ball didn’t need to be top notch in those Kilkenny sides and you’d have to guess that the defenders were regularly told to deliver long and quick and not to be too worried about the quality of it.
But when he was good, my God he could be outstanding.
