Kilkenny GAA thread

I consider Aidan Tallis the best of several promising young goalkeepers. So do most other people in the county.

Kilkenny never had as many talented goalkeepers.

Eoin Murphy

Richie Reid (best three or four in Ireland, if he was in the position)
Alan Murphy (also a really good goalkeeper – much better than he is out the field)
Darren Brennan (never entirely sure of this fella)
Dean Mason
Liam Dunphy (Lisdowney)
Seán Manogue (James Stephens)
Ben Maher (only sub goalkeeper with OLG as yet but notably talented)
Darragh Holohan (consistently fine with Dicksboro)
Brian Manogue (also Dicksboro and could be right good as well)
Diarmuid Galway (Thomastown number 1 at 18 but overshadowed by the era he is in)

They’ll need them.

Not saying he’s not good or anything but James Stephens keeper let in some howler against Ballyhale

OK, so

  1. Nicky Quaid
  2. Eoin Murphy
  3. Stephen O’Keefe
  4. Richie Reid

He did. But he is an excellent young goalkeeper.

Eoin Murphy is better than Nicky Quaid.

Patrick Collins is a good goalkeeper, as is Mark Fanning. That recent Dublin U20 goalkeeper, Eddie Gibbons, looked like he could be handy.

Enda Rowland did not have a good 2021 but he had earlier looked phenomenal.

In all likelihood.

AT made a phenomenal save against Laois in the U20 game last summer, which Kilkenny were pretty lucky to win. He killed a well struck shot dead and up into his hand and made an incisive clearance, if memory serves, and Kilkenny got a point, which was a four point swing.

We’ll be disagreeing on this one.

Currently, Nicky Quaid is a better all round keeper than Eoin Murphy. His puckouts and general distribution are a good bit ahead. Murphy is a better shot stopper, he tends to pull off spectacular saves, but Nicky is not a poor shot stopper, as he showed this year. Nicky is better under dropping ball.

It’s very marginal, Eoin Murphy tends to garner more media attention via the eye catching saves but then again he’s playing behind a poorer defence than Nicky so is bound to be called upon more.

Certainly over the past 2 years, Nicky has overtaken him as the best in the land. I’d agree Eoin Murphy was up to that point.

Nicky Quaid is terrific, do not get me wrong. But no one ever talks about him as possibly the best goalkeeper of all time. Eoin Murphy is routinely mentioned in those terms.

EM, as regards puckouts and distribution, is operating in an acutely dysfunctional intercounty set up. People do not know the half of it…

I accept your last point there alright. Quaid is given huge autonomy over puckouts and since that has happened he has absolutely flourished in that area. In that aspect of the game I think he’s absolutely phenomenal

Is Henry allowed borrow wan or two?

EM isn’t pucking the ball out to roided up giants either

Tell us the other half and a bit of it so…

Eoin Murphy is the best we’ve seen since Brendan Cummins.

Quaid isn’t in the same league, he’s a good keeper like McGarry was but Murphy is different standard altogether.

Do Do Do…

Murphy has great personality too as a goalie. Bit of a dash about him.

Quaid is very good, but a bit boring.

Were you not the fella saying Quaid was nowhere near good enough for the top level? lols
