Yes, they did draw.

No, his Dad was from Muckalee and they were living there when he and most of his siblings were born, they moved to a neighbouring towns land which is in O’ Loughlins catchment, it’s one of the ’ country ’ parts of OLG. His younger brothers played for OLG.

Yes, he was probably 17 or 18 then, one of his older brothers played midfield.

Big strong mountain men who bet all before them that year. Tony Maher would put the fear of god into you on a nice day.

The old old Leyland Road was my dad’s generation. Great oul stories about it.

I would have to check the box in the attic of my folks house to see if the Ballyhale program from '81 is there. The Blackrock program is certainly there, with the autographs in it.

Ballycastle developed a good relationship with Castlegar too back then as well as Ballyhale. Mind being down on a summer holiday in Galway in the summer of '83 and there just happened to be a tournament between Castlegar, Kiltormer, Ballycastle and Loughgiel, who were the All Ireland champions. There was some controversy with Kiltormer and St Rynaghs in the club semi-final the previous spring and Kiltormer wanted to prove a point so they beat Loughgiel in one semi-final. Castlegar beat Ballycastle in the other semi final and then there was a 3rd place play off and we beat the hoors from Loughgiel and repeated that feat 2 months later in the county final!!!

Callan can be grim at the best of times, in 1985 it was the capital of Grimtopia.

Myself and the father went up to the Kilkenny county final that year. It was one of the most enjoyable games of hurling I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t be one for GAA betting odds but Shamrocks must have been the equivalent of 1/100 favourites.

I’d imagine they’d have had the winning of an All-Ireland club title at their peak in the 00’s as one club. They had some serious forwards.

They’d never have been more than the split of their parts such was the hatred

Callan back down to Junior.

Young Irelands 3-13
John Lockes 1-07

:pensive:

Ye won’t be there long. Of all the under age teams I’ve come across in the last 2 years,Callan are well up there with the most impressive. Somebody has obviously caught the bull by the horns up there and has a vision for yere future.

It’s very difficult to come back out of that junior.

Emerald reached an intermediate final in 13 I think, relegated in 14 and stuck down there since. Always easier win one relegation game than 3/4 knockout matches.

Mooncoin v Tullaghor should be a good junior final this year. Tullogher have that minor team coming next year too. Mooncoin strong at underage recently and have benefited from lads working locally due to COVID.

Same with camogie, Callan underage teams from U16 down have been excellent this year.

@Malarkey what would opinions on Liam Fennellys coaching ability be like around your parts? Decent reputation or not?

Big weekend in Kilkenny GAA, nice to see the first round of the SFC throw in

Not a question for answering in public.

I know and like Liam. Very bright man.

TJ Reid going for a 10th medal today. Would
he be the first player to achieve that feat if he succeeds? A sprinkling of the Fennelly clan with 9 presumably between 1978-1991.

Sound, didn’t mean anything by it, just curious. I would infer however if it was positive that you would be happy to say it publicly. But understand personal reasons for not wanting to do so

There was a Jer Doheny played with Tullaroan. Wiki says:

At club level Doheny was a ten-time medallist with Tullaroan and Johnstown, while he also played with Threecastles.

*I’ll never try copy and paste from wiki again.
