Once money started to be pumped into the sport the days of the skilful hurler who had a life outside of IC hurling was numbered

That is the downside to Cody’s legacy, though in fairness, it’s also just the way it’s gone. Playing IC hurling is like playing senior tinder these days.

We’re missing a real top quality forward alright. I’d be interested to see how Bowe progresses. Maybe Andy Ormond or Sean Hayes (my father reckons he has it. I’m not so sure) will make some progress.

You’d never really know who will come through and who won’t. If you’re good enough to play minor for tipp and have either size or speed or preferably both, everything else can be got with hard work.
You’d need a fairly single track approach though. A certain lack of imagination one might say.
Folk like Cian Lynch are exempt as they were just born with stardust.

Never usually. Kilkenny normally have the same format across Senior and Intermediate. League/Championship.

Beating Kilkenny will never mean as much again.
The beatings of 10, 16 and 19 offered some redress to Tipp supporters and will have added weight to achievements of some of those Tipp players who played in all 3 finals. I’m sure any player covets an All Ireland medal but to do it against a Brian Cody managed team was really the pinnacle such was the aura and esteem in which he is held. I always said you had to be 6 points better than Kilkenny to beat them by 1. Sunday encapsulated that albeit with the margin being 2 when the final tallies were delivered. Kilkenny were relentless and ruthless in those years and a team that would strike fear. Never beaten. Im not sure I’ve ever witnessed a team that in many ways was a mirror image of their manager. I am sad to see him go as its a reminder of some sorts that time waits for no man and nothing lasts forever but when the story of hurling is rewritten again it will be quite a legacy left behind. For Kilkenny supporters they will be glad they lived through this era under Cody. For other followers of the game once the losses assauge they too will appreciate what he did for the game all the same.
