Brian McEvoy was another talent who didn’t fit the Cody prototype
Yeah, Cha Fitzpatrick (bar a few seasons) was another. Once he developed doubts about a player that was it - there was no coming back.
Chunky O Brien also unlucky to miss out
Cha was a demon for the drink. I think Cody gave him every chance to be honest
Ah stop.
John Dalton was another chap who was never seen again after being sent off in the 2011 league final.
A wizard
McEvoy had ridiculous talent but lack the massive work rate Cody demands .
What age is Cha yet ?? 36 at most ??
About that I’d say
Same go as Richie Power. Both were on the 2002 and 2003 minors
Martin Breheny did a rare decent piece in the Indo a couple of years back, I think it was to mark the 20th anniversary of Cody getting appointed.
They listed every player who played championship under him. There was a whole clatter of players who’d have walked into most other county teams and probably been household names. As it was most of them got a mere handful of appearances or little more, before fading away into obscurity.
Mind you most of them picked up an AI or two along the way to ease the pain.
Richie Hogan’s brother Paddy was one I had high hopes for. He was an excellent underage player but like that drifted away after two or three years of being on the periphery of the starting 15.
Eoin Larkin wore the Number 12 jersey for the guts of a decade, played in 7 All Ireland final winning teams in the Number 12 shirt from 2006-14 and his standards rarely dropped below excellent. Don’t know how you could consider anyone else as Number 12 other than Eoin Larkin.
TJ Reid only established himself as a regular Kilkenny starter in 2014 (in his 8th season on the panel). He has had a tendency to be shut out in big matches - 2016 & 19 All Ireland Finals and 2018 quarter final loss to Limerick cases in point. Matthew O’Hanlon has had his number too.
So was Chunky. But what a player
I’d definitely consider TJ anyway, seeing as he has scored 38-609 in 114 appearances as opposed to Eoins 22-288 in 117 appearances.
That’s a difference of 16-321 in 3 less games.
Nearly double.
I know frees come into it but remember Larkin often took them as well.
I was looking at some of TJ Reid’s most recent championship scoring returns:
2019 in the three knock out matches in Croke Park, cumulatively he scored 0-2 from play. Scoreless in quarter final against Cork and 0-1 from play in both semi final and final against Limerick and Tipperary.
In 2018, 0-1 from play in quarter final defeat to Limerick.
2017, Kilkenny lost to Waterford in a qualifier. TJ scored 1-1 from play there.
In 2016 scoreless from play in semi final draw against Waterford, 0–1 from play in replay and scoreless in final hammering to Tipperary.
Based on those sort of returns, he seems to score a lot from frees.
Did he? I honestly can’t recall a championship match where Larkin was the main free taker. Shefflin, in his absence Power and then TJ took over the frees.
He has 6 medals. Three of them are as a sub and he didn’t play. Ffs James Ryall has 6^ medals.
^ probably only 2
He definitely was on them for the odd league.Maybe early rounds of championship as well. Not 100% on that.
