Kilkenny Gaelic Football Thread

John Walsh is a decent footballer too. Went to Good Counsel. I’d say a fair majority of that Kilkenny team went to school in New Ross which would half explain their tendency for the big ball game. Walsh I think was in with Cody and the hurlers for a while too last year or in recent years anyway? He scored 2-5 in a minor final win nearly 10 years ago now when they beat Limerick.

Lovely sensible goal. Beautiful vision. Play the ball first time instead of picking it up and getting caught in possession. I’d say there’s senior inter county managers looking at that and thinking there’s something in this.

He kicked a cracking goal in the minor final as well.

Scorer looked two footed. First effort with right then a lovely finish with the left.

The K&DL has always been strong and it’s influence on our shtyle of football is plain to see.

Football in Kilkenny does come in for jibes alright, but if a dozen or so counties who don’t even pay lip service to hurling put as much effort into hurling as Kilkenny do to football then hurling would be far better served.

What way does the Junior championship work? I assume that New York and London can’t use players who played for the senior side earlier in the championship, are their sides mainly made up of local players who have come up through underage and the clubs?

New York fielded all homegrown players none of whom played in the Tailteann Cup. Same for London I believe.

Was it about 4 years ago they got slaughtered by the jimmies in a practice match?

Wouldn’t do the south Kilkenny teams too bad to play in the junior b championship down here and work their way up. I learnt before the Clare game there’s lads who play for Tullogher/Rosbercon who’d go and travel and support Wexford and definitely don’t support Kilkenny in the hurling.

Mind you, they’d get some grief off teams.

Tullogher knocked Gorey out of the Leinster junior football championship about 3 years ago. Think they may have only been the intermediate football champions in Kilkenny at the time too.

O’Loughlin Gaels knocked Clongeen out of the junior championship last October as well!

We all love the beer for the week after a county final mind.

@count_of_monte_crist would know more about the challenge game.

I’d be shocked though that lads from Tullogher support Wexford over Kilkenny. Wally Walsh is from tullogher and any of the lads I’d have been in school with would have been staunch Kilkenny men and make it well known they were too crossing the border.

The likes of Glenmore used to be decent in football but it seems to have gone away completely there. Tullogher not much better. Mainly it’d be the lads in Good Counsel who would be decent and play for the club then. Mullinavat have a decent team in fairness to them, heap of them on that squad yesterday

Lad I was chatting away to now was in late 20’s and went to the brothers in Ross. Was explaining that there was lads from Kk/Wx who’d support one over the other. Found it mad, but at the same time, you could walk handy enough across the bridge in Rosbercon in a short few minutes.

a bit further ago than that… id say it could nearly be ten years at this stage.

We were definitely intermediate, they were an absolute rabble that night, great to see them giving some time to the big ball rather than paying it lip service. They have always produced some fantastic footballers which Good Counsel were lucky to profit form.

There’s a Joyce lad currently in the AFL i believe with St. Kilda, Darragh(?)

in and around the time of this infamous photo;

Darragh from Inistiogue is Kieran’s brother. Plays for St Kilda. One of the diaspora surely be able to tell us how he’s getting on? @Fitzy ?

He’s been there a few years now, but I don’t think he’s played many AFL games, so not a regular first teamer. I must say I was surprised when he came here, I would have thought his sports career would have been better served playing hurling with Cody.
@Gman can probably tell you more.

yeah hes on the fringes of first team action, played a few games this year and been named the emergency sub, so isnt far off it, but hasnt nailed down a spot yet. I was surprised to see him get a contract extension the last time. Serious footballer though, was midfield on GCC teams. Thomas O Connor from Tullogher was another exceptional footballer, best player on the GCC team that won a football all ireland at junior level. He missed the senior as he had signed with Southampton. Wall Walsh and Matt O Hanlon were the midfield pairing in there one year too, Walsh making shite of Knockbegs Donie Kingston in Ross in a senior colleges game one year. I’ve always said if they put any bit of effort into it, they would be a decent team. But it is what it is.
