While I’d have no grá for Carlow, they have a population of 54,612. Wicklow have a population of 136,640. And at least Carlow are trying to play two codes as well, albeit not awfully well.
Wicklow are a funny one, it’s not like they don’t care about GAA, they regularly beat the shite out of each other at club matches. They just can’t put the animosity aside at county level. While they are shit at hurling they are probably still ahead of 15+ counties.
Its most likely the bleed of Dublin into the county thats causing a problem. Probably also affecting Meath.
Credit to Kildare (christ thats hard to say), they are actually doing great work in hurling of late, most notably in Nass. Whether it will come to anything remains to be seen.
Quinn insisted that the team had put in the adequate time and effort prior to the defeat, but admitted developing football in such a hurling stronghold has proved an onerous endeavour.
“In the lead up to the game, by our own standards, preparations had gone well. Nobody envisaged what was about to happen but it did happen on the day and I would apologise to everybody for that. I will say in the GAA in Kilkenny that over the years we’ve got a lot of things right.
“We have never been able to get football to where we’d like to get it to and we will have to deal with these issues starting tomorrow night, when we will have an executive meeting of the management committee of the county board,” Quinn said.
Back in the day we entered a senior schools team. We had a few Tipp lads on it but say only 3/4 is all. Played 3rd division but beat a team from Laois. Some school from Kildare gave us a trimming in the next round but we had a teacher from Laois who was able to help us understand the game a bit better.
My inter county minor football career was disfigured by Kilkenny. I had been a faithful sub for the Deise all season never getting a run but I was given the nod that I would get game time against Kilkenny. It was in the South Leinster Minor Football League which we were leading and KK were the last game. We had gone 6 points up and were cruising and the selectors thought it would be safe enough to give O Dowd a run. However in the sixty seconds it took me to complete my warm up the cunts scored two goals and all bets were off. After about 5 minutes I was told to put my tracksuit back on and that was that.
I won a south leinster Junior C medal at the football meself.
Beat 3 Wexford teams in the league stage before taking out Dunlavin after extra time in the next round.
Heywood, we beat in the South final in Nowlan Park. Good game, some hi-kinks in the crowd that day as well. Rathangan done us in the leinster semi. They struck me as a scummy mob. No idea who won the final, that’s how little we cared. Good laugh though.
Big Tom went to every game as there were a few of the team on the senior hurling team. Any of them looked injured at all and he wanted them taken off.
Big Tom was some legend. Had him for Junior Cert Irish. Never turned up for class one day and looked out the window and he was mowing the hurling pitch for Senior training that afternoon.
Once got a bye into a County Junior Semi final. Yep a bye straight to the semi. We were about to take to the field and asked one of the selectors who had the footballs. His reply was ha would you believe we don’t have one. Had to get a soccer ball out of the car.
Was only talking to the brother last night about Big Tom’s style of coaching for the 'Lockes underage. Legend. Can’t remember any tactical know how coming from him only that the other team will be ready for us as they were playing at home or up for it as the game was on in JLP. We would have had to go far in a competition to get to a neutral pitch.
Had him for Geography for the Inter Cert, spent most his time in the book store to be fair. Saw him loose his temper once with us - he couldn’t get over the fact that a class of 14 year olds would be messing when left alone for 25 mins!!
