People used say to me Richie Power will be better than Cha Fitzpatrick – or vice versa. Could only reply: ‘Whichever way, doesn’t matter. They’ll be hurling for the same county.’
This instance, they will even be hurling for the same club.
Not really, not championship. But he did win a National League medal as a sub in 1976.
Did not, so far as I know, hurl Minor or U21 with Kilkenny. Then again, Kilkenny did not enter an U21 team in 1973, which would have been Michael’s last year in the grade. I imagine he might well have been on that team.
How many are in that Fennelly family? Michael Sr, Brendan and Dermot hurled with the four county brothers for the Shamrocks and there’s a sister Monica that you mentioned there.
Tis indeed. You often see that a really good hurler’s father played intercounty Minor and/or U21 but went no further. Cha Fitzpatrick, Derek Lyng and Jackie Tyrrell would be cases in point. Off the current team, so would Eoin Murphy (I think), Paddy Deegan, John Donnelly (I think), TJ Reid and Adrian Mullen.
Ah no, I’m not trying to be smart… More than fair question from you on a forum. It’s just that I think such queries, especially before 2030, are irrelevant on the local scene.
There were, on the panel that won the 2019 Club AI, seven of the second generation: Michael and Colin Fennelly (Michael); Patrick, Kevin, Darren and Adrian Mullen (Monica); and Kevin Fennelly (Dermot).
Possibly the biggest talent of all is an 11yo. Won’t name him, since he’s only 11 in 2019 – and would be grateful if no one else did, for same reason. He is the last boy of the second generation in Ballyhale and could be anything as a hurler.
The beginnings of a third generation are on the rise. Hope I am around to see them hurl in due course.
An 11year old determined the future of kilkenny hurling. Il enjoy this all Ireland so will i? Nothing coming up through the ranks, @myboyblue a chance for Laois to take charge here.
