King Henry of Galway (Part 1) šŸ‘‘

Very level headed normal young lad. No notions, no forcing bits in about humanitarian work in order to push the narrative.

Meanwhile, get your orders in

Great fella, would probably make any team in the country when he is right.

Even when not going great, he is always a massive threat.

Young enough, could definitely see him reprise his role at 14 for Galway.

An interesting take naming a development squad. Lots of counties donā€™t even name a squad.

An old clubmate of mine tells me young Mcdonagh of S-Mb-My is unbelievably skilful.

Ps what actually is a ā€œdevelopment squadā€? Is it aimed at keeping hurlers with their own parishes? Iā€™d not be a huge fan of yet more demands on young fellas time and energy. Iā€™d also hate to think that the management donā€™t continually scour the county at all adult levels looking for axemen with potential.

Iā€™m unable to make any sense out of this excuse/rationale whatsoever. What am I missing?

Youā€™re undoubtedly familiar with the concept of a ā€œringerā€ Boxty

Well they said it was a lad called X. We knew for a fact that the lad called X was still in bed in lahndan as he shared a flat with someone else we knew well. Also the lad brought on was about a foot taller, and an absolute beast of a hurler. Thereā€™s no way youā€™d have him as a sub, put it that way.

McDonagh reminds me a bit of Richie Hogan. Similar type of build. Low centre of gravity. Very skillful. Still very young obviously. Isnā€™t he still U-20 eligible for another 2 years? Not sure they even expected him to play much for the U-20ā€™s before Christmas but Oisin Flannery got injured which got him on the pitch against Kilkenny. Heā€™ll need time though.

I just wonder is part of the reason for a development squad so lads like him arenā€™t under pressure to transfer to perceived bigger clubs.
I donā€™t like to see too much load on these lads tbh.
Iā€™m not sure itā€™s entirely healthy if the balance goes too far that way. Itā€™s a lot of time, mileage and training. Galway is a big county to travel around.

Fordey has wintered.

That kind of thing doesnā€™t happen much in Galway does it? Poaching of players I mean

No hardly ever to my knowledge. Itā€™s not even poaching by the clubs I donā€™t think, more potentially a lad like McDonagh for instance being suggested he may have a better chance of senior IC playing at a higher level or with higher training numbers or more lads on the mileage or something. Iā€™m categorically not saying it has happened to McDonagh, just that heā€™s the type of lad it could, and no club would turn him down I donā€™t think. Iā€™ve been told heā€™d be the nicest lad youā€™d ever meet.

Would Donal Oā€™Shea not be deemed good enough for the real panel?

Bit light yet maybe?

Iā€™m very well versed in the practice and use of ringers. The second explanation clarifies the situation somewhat. The first report was somewhat ambiguous.

He nearly turned the game tbh.

I think heā€™s serious prospect. A different player to McDonagh, but nearly as good a prospect as him.

Hard to see him staying with Salthill. A move to Rahoon/Newcastle or even Liam Mellows would probably bring him on. Heā€™ll be lucky to come out with his life playing in the junior ranks in Galway.

Haran had to get a solicitor iirc to move to Mellows

Off the top of my head I can only think of Conor Kavanagh who moved from Kinvara to Liam Mellows and Kevin Brady a good dual player who moved from Sylane to Cashel.

Where is he from originally?
