Kyle Hayes - Siobhan from Liveline has logged into the chat

Excellent post

He deserves the All Star for his fine array of stylish jackets in addition to play on the field. Has developed into hurling’s Darelle Revis cc Jackie Tyrell, where opponents actively avoid his half of the field.

I agree there its a very grey area but you’d have to seriously question what were they thinking. Pat Nolan could barely string a coherent sentence together on it yesterday on Liveline but I suppose at least he fronted up.

Hayes wasn’t even that good this year when it mattered. He played zonally, but Cork still scored a rake of points down his wing in the third quarter while the man he was supposed to be tracking was firing over Hollywood points on the far side.

He was so bad last year that Corks whole semi final plan revolved around avoiding him :grinning:

Sure you’re talking to a fella more interested in taking photos of Henry Shefflin up at Croke Park than heading to support his team in an AIF the same day.

If that’s what you want to be believe then fair enough. You’d swear Cork were supposed to puck the ball straight to him. Deccie Dalton had twice the impact on that game.

but thats one game where its debatable whether he played good or bad or was ineffective or whatever. But the point being, he was still easily on of the best half backs last year. A dog with a mallet up his hole would know that. The fact he kicked the shit of a lad 5 years ago and drove like a fucking idiot trying to kill himself, whether people like it or not, has little to do with his hurling ability. If we are to pick all stars who are morally great and nice people as well as great players, then yes, he is no where near it. Until that time comes though, he was deserving of his all star last year, and I dont even think its near debatable from a purely hurling perspective.

Keeping him out of the game was the winning of it for Cork (and very, very clever from Pat Ryan. He deserves credit for it).
He was a monster in Munster. He dominated everyone he came up against.

He also had the misfortune to be the only player reffed for the penalty rule

The only player you saw. There was other games where penalties were awarded, and Clare conceded one that wasnt even close to being considered a penalty in my opinion. Hayes’ one was a stonewall concession based on the rules.

You hate to see the fine people in PWC being dragged into this

That’s all that matters in an INTERNET argument mate.

I was obviously joking about the penalty, but its was applied inconsistently.

My main point is that, in a do-or-die match, Cork thought so highly of him that they implemented a puck out strategy that was designed to take him out of the game.

When Tony Kelly has a quiet game, he goes AWOL, with Hayes, he gets a free pass.

At the end of the day he stood on his wing being completely ineffective for 55-60 minutes while Deccie Dalton was firing over Hollywood points and having a big impact on the game.

He deserved All Stars for his hurling in the past but not in 2024. The round robin games are barely weighted. Calum Lyons was unreal in the Round Robin but wasnt near making the team.

The half back line should have been McInerney, Conlon and Downey.

The INTERNET never forgets…

Yeah the consistency probably is poor, but I dont think that was a bad call, at all. There was far, far worse. And there were ones also not called.

And I also agree, Corks main strategy was to avoid Hayes because he had been so dominant. If their game plan worked to avoid a defender, I dont see how that could be used as a reason for him not to get an all star then.

Agreed. But you wont shut them up, and thats the reality. A quiet word could have been had here through the back channels, no HOTY nomination, and to be left off the team, that he wants to keep his head down, etc etc. It may seem unfair, but life can be unfair sometimes, take your licks and come back stronger.

Modern life is rubbish.
