Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships 2016

Scotty and Duzza is going to be a cracker.

True greatness from Scotty.

Geert must be completely shell shocked.

Incredible sporting drama.

The greatest week of sport of the year.

I fancy The Silencer to have too much for The Harbour Master tomorrow but it’s a flip of a coin trying to call the other 3 matches.

Strongest last eight line up I can ever recall and when you consider some of the great players who haven’t made it, it just proves what rude health BDO darts is in.

Personally, I wouldn’t rule any of the eight out of claiming the famous old trophy come Sunday.

Every year, it just gets better. We think it’s impossible, but the bar just keeps being raised.

Just look at that scene at Lakeside well over 15 minutes on from the end of the match. Most of the hugely knowledgeable audience still standing around and discussing the sensational action they’ve seen this evening.

No security staff there roaring at them to get out like in some other darting organisations. They’re happy to let the crowd stand or sit around and chat, and let the patrons at famous old arena empty out gradually, at their leisure. Those working at Lakeside are real darts people and are joining in the discussion like everybody else, still enthralled at what they’ve seen.

Very reminiscent of how the crowds stand around talking after big GAA matches, with the knowledgeable stewards, or “maors” usually joining in. And it’s the same after every session throughout the nine days.

Real people, real fans, real knowledge.

People will be leaving work early all over the continent tomorrow with confirmation that Durrant-Waites will close the afternoon session.

And all over the world they’ll be making the appropriate arrangements to see the box office showdown quarter-final, according to whatever time zone they’re in. One world, one championship.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the wonderful effort earlier today of 16 year old Jordan Boyce from Donegal, who narrowly lost out 3-2 to England’s Joshua Richardson in the World Youth final.

Jordan did himself, his county and his country proud. It was great to see that green, white and orange tricolour hanging from the rafters at Lakeside today.

Wonderful to know that the future of Irish darts is in such good hands. Jordan will be back at Lakeside to go one better next year, of that I’m sure.

Lakeside trivia fact:
Mark “Geezer” McGeeney wore an Irish flag lapel on his breast pocket in his two matches at this years championship, as shown in this video:

Just home myself now. The joys of been self employed. Multi-tasking for the afternoon, working from home and watching the big Yorkshire shoot out.

Last year’s semi final between Duzza and Wolfie was the greatest darts match I’ve ever had the privilege of watching. Hoping for more of the same this afternoon. Yozza has beaten Sparky 5-1 in the first of the quarter finals.

Outstanding fighting spirit from Scott Waites.

4-2 down and 2-0 down in legs with Duzza only needing to win one of the next three legs, two on throw, to win, Scotty reels off three staright to save himself and bring us back to 4-3.

1-1 in set 8…

Key moments.

Scotty hits the bull!

2-1 in this set.

Did he mean to hit it?

Glen’s Uncle George is going through agony in the crowd.

And Scotty nails 110 to break Duzza in leg 4 of set 8 to force a deciding set!

Another Lakeside classic.

For fuck sake - the two best players in the tournament by a mile meeting each other and they schedule it for the afternoon when everyone is in work (apart from @Sidney)

4-4 a deciding set. This is incredible stuff from the comeback king Scotty. He looked down and almost out at 1-3 and 2-4 down.

Duzza throwing first in the final set.

And holds with a solid 15 darter.

@GeoffreyBoycott is at home watching it as well.

Yeah but as has been well documented, we’re the same person.

Chance to break for Duzza…but he misses seven darts for it!

Scotty missed four but gets the fifth!

1-1.
