Was mentioned in a tv show (think could have been about Matt Connor) that Bord an Mona plants provided enough employment in Offaly in 80s that they were not impacted as badly by emigration as other counties were
Not sure how accurate this claim is, but they had a incredible group(s) of players in 80s/90s
That Offaly team of the 90s were a super outfit. They were always good to watch.
They played some super stuff to win in 98 as well and their supporters were always a decent bunch - one of them once insisted on buying me a cup of tea at a league game in Birr by way of apology for robbing us in 94.
âThe difference in class between the Wexford players and the Offaly players in my opinion was huge. Offaly were able to carry themselves. They had a bit of class about them off the field, a higher calibre of individual. We had a great relationship with Offaly. I would have had fierce high regard for the Offaly players, but I couldnât say the same about Wexford. There may have been fierce rivalry at the time between Limerick and Clare but at the back of it all there was a fierce respect. In my case I wouldnât have that respect for Wexford. Certainly some of them were fine, but I wouldnât have any grĂĄ for the majority of them. Our paths donât cross that often but that suits me fine.â
