Can anybody think of another player written up like Browne, who wasn’t involved in even one noteworthy inter-county championship win in his entire career?
Beating Clare in the 1998 Munster Semi Final was a noteworthy win, a Clare side with a good smattering of 1992 Munster champions, who the previous year had knocked out Cork and pushed eventual All Ireland champions Kerry all the way. Clare were operating two divisions above Tipperary in the National League before the realignment at the start of the 1998 league.
One thing for sure is this: If the Nembo Kid had been leading the treaty talks in 1921 instead of Collins Ireland would have gained total control of the 32 counties. Churchill and Lloyd George would have buckled under his unrelenting
combatative style and probably thrown in the Isle of Man as a “please go home” bonus…
Paddy Bradley.
I was under the impression Tipperary lost the 1998 Munster final.
He would have been shot way before that.
By his own.
Game, set, match for about the 4th time in the last 18 hours for the same side on this very thread.
That’s what treacherous Cork quislings do alright.
Can we get opinions on who was the better player in these head to heads, please?
I’m hoping we can turn this into a series, perhaps having one head to head debate per day before Christmas.
Larry Tompkins v Greg Blaney
Brian McGuigan v Declan O’Sullivan
John Galvin v Neil Gallagher
Conor Gormley v Graham Canty
Declan Browne v Mattie Forde

Henry Downey v Stephen O’Brien
Darragh O’Se v Anthony Tohill
Paddy Kelly v John McEntee

Steven McDonnell v James O’Donoghue
Colm Cooper v Peter Canavan
Nicholas Murphy v Sean Cavanagh
Tony Scullion v Mark O’Connor
William Kirby v Enda McGinley
Colm McFadden v Johnny Crowley
Boom.
O’Neill and Joyce is a tough one to split, O’Neill probably the more talented of the two but Joyce was a better leader and much more central to his side. The other ones are pretty straight forward.
I’m torn in the Gavin Devlin v Ger Spillane battle.
I just don’t know who to go for, I really don’t.
Horse would at least give you a body.
Better than be ‘disappeared’.
Haha
Larry Tompkins v Greg Blaney
Brian McGuigan v Declan O’Sullivan Too tight to call
John Galvin v Neil Gallagher
Conor Gormley v Graham Canty Close one though
Declan Browne v Mattie Forde
Stephen O’Neill v Padraig Joyce
Niall Cahalane v Kieran McKeever Meh
Henry Downey v Stephen O’Brien Meh
Darragh O’Se v Anthony Tohill Too tight to call
Paddy Kelly v John McEntee
Gavin Devlin v Ger Spillane Meh
Mike Frank Russell v Benny Coulter
Steven McDonnell v James O’Donoghue O’Donoghue would replace him with a few more titles
Colm Cooper v Peter Canavan
Nicholas Murphy v Sean Cavanagh
Tony Scullion v Mark O’Connor Meh
William Kirby v Enda McGinley Meh
Colm McFadden v Johnny Crowley On the basis that he didn’t go missing go for seasons at a time
A feast of debating for your eyes.

Ger Houlahan v Joe Kavanagh
Eamon Breen v Johnny McGurk
Gregory McCartan v Pearse O’Neill
Derry Foley v Fergal Logan
Pa Dennehy v Adrian Cush
The 4 Of Us v The Frank and Walters
Larry Tompkins v Greg Blaney - Tough one, i’d just about go for Blaney as he had lesser support overall.
Brian McGuigan v Declan O’Sullivan - Super difficult. Think DOS was just that little bit more flexible.
John Galvin v Neil Gallagher - No contest, Galvin every day.
Conor Gormley v Graham Canty - Canty comfortably. Gormley took alot of roastings and hos name and rep is greatly embelished by one act, however important, it was pretty straight forward and more poor from the forward than anything.
Declan Browne v Mattie Forde - No contest, Browne.
Stephen O’Neill v Padraig Joyce - No contest either, Joyce. SON was a bit of a softcock.
Niall Cahalane v Kieran McKeever - Very tough but Cahalane was able to play literally everywhere. Thats a split though.
Henry Downey v Stephen O’Brien - Henry Downey. One of the greats.
Darragh O’Se v Anthony Tohill - Tohill by a mile. Think Daragh, as good as he was, was quite inconsistent and kinda gets carried by the 2 brothers who i think both outdone him.
Paddy Kelly v John McEntee - Paddy Kelly. Rolls Royce of a footballer.
Gavin Devlin v Ger Spillane - Spillane. Nicer oerson.
Mike Frank Russell v Benny Coulter - Coulter comfortably. He carried Down for a long time. MF could be very average despite being surrounded by stars.
Steven McDonnell v James O’Donoghue - Stevie, simply on body of work to date.
Colm Cooper v Peter Canavan - Gooch, not by much though. Both are over rated.
Nicholas Murphy v Sean Cavanagh - Cavanagh by a mile. Nick was a bit soft for a long time. Cavanagh was/is tougher and more adaptable.
Tony Scullion v Mark O’Connor - FFS. How could you even put MOC in this list. He shouldn’t even have played IC. Scullion by a mile.
William Kirby v Enda McGinley - Tough one, give it to McGinley simply because i think he was under appreciated.
Colm McFadden v Johnny Crowley - Hard one, but overall i think Crowley was craftier.
I think Derry Foley was better than Fergal Logan.
There. I said it.
Kev get off the forum.
Matty Forde was scoring more than whole counties in his prime - 2-10 in the qualifiers v Offaly, 4-5 v Galway in Division 1 of the league - Browne (though a class footballer) doesn’t even touch him.
